RE: The Washington Sniper —- Death???

If they are found guilty, I see absolutely no reason why they should not be executed. Their actions were totally indiscriminate, and carried out over three weeks, terrorising two states and many millions of people. So the older bloke served in the Gulf War – that gave him the right to do such things, did it? And the younger fellow – what was his motive – a bit of fun?

Don’t know which state they will be found guilty in, or the manner of execution which would apply, but they both deserve nothing less.

RE: What could be the reason of the cockpit-window cracking?

The pressure outside the aircraft would be lower than inside, not higher.

If glass cracked during flight, a number of things would need to be considered:

    1. Whether the glass was faulty in some way. (Possible)
    2. Temperature extremes or severe fluctuations. (Less possible)
    3. Vibration – was the glass securely mounted? (Possible)
    4. Was there a fault in the mounting of the glass which placed undue pressure on it in one spot, such as a small high spot in the frame which pressed on the glass and placed excess pressure at one point. (Possible)
    5. Impact from something either inside or outside the aircraft. (Possible, but unlikely from outside if the aircraft was operating at normal altitude)
    6. Pressure fluctuation inside the aircraft. (Unlikely)

Could be other reasons too – anybody got some other ideas?

Great photos, particularly the close up of the nose – and it just goes to show, you learn something new every day. I had no idea the early P-51 and A-36 had guns mounted below the engine.

I’d love to see a similar photo taken of a Merlin engined P-51 to get some idea of the engineering changes that were required to fit it to the original airframe. Does anybody have any such pics, or can someone enlighten me as to exactly what changes were required to replace the Alison with a Merlin?

Also, another what if? Was the P-51 ever fitted with a Griffon as an experiment or as a prototype for an upgraded model? Were there any contra-prop models during the Mustang’s original life (ie, not later Cavalier versions etc)?

RE: America is a spent force in international politics

I’ve seen enough of John Pilger to wonder why he ever admits to being Australian – all he ever seems to do is bucket this country for its actions or inactions over the years and take up the cause of the bleeding hearts. He may know his stuff, but he is too highly opinionated for me.

I am inclined to wonder at the degree of US influence in the world today. I do think it has diminished to some extent in recent months. The non-Islamic world knows it has a problem on its hands with religious zealots, but also knows that war is not necessarily the answer. The problems being experienced world wide at present limit the viability of simply attacking Iraq. Where do you go after that? As a number of us have pointed out, they still haven’t captured Bin Laden. Taking on further areas doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I agree with the analogy already put forward. America has a bad habit of thinking that what’s good for the US is good for the (western) world, and we know that isn’t correct much of the time. Public feedback out here has caused our government to back-pedal on its unilateral support of Bush’s proposals. Our Prime Minister has been described as Bush’s lap-dog, which is demeaning to Australians, as we consider ourselves to be independent and capable of running our own affairs. Unfortunately, recent actions by the PM tended to subjugate those nationalistic feelings and make us look as though we wanted to do whatever the US said. The PM now knows better.

I don’t think the US is a spent force, but I do believe that many of its allies are most reluctant to engage in further conflict at present, even though many of them are suffering from terrorist actions of one sort or another. The US has the military capability of virtually eliminating any opponent it chooses, but forgets than many of the rest of us are far weaker militarily and financially, and in no position to engage in major wars.

    RE: An argument

I think perhaps one of us should take up the cudgels – but we need an opponent. That means we need two twits to start insulting each other over a few weeks whilst the rest of us sit back and laugh at them.
We would also need controversial topics over which to argue. Suggested subjects over which a fight could be started:

The Cricket (always good with the poms coming out to Oz to get the bejeesus belted out of them again. Wish they would send out a team of cricketers instead of a team of croquet-ers)
Of little interest to our American and European friends, however.

Should the United States give Alaska back to the Soviet Union? Bit difficult, as the S.U. packed up its kit and went home years ago. Probably wouldn’t know what to do with Alaska anyway.

Should New Zealand invade the Aleutians? Nah, probably not – they probably wouldn’t know where they hell they were.

Is the pope really a Catholic? Non-Catholics only need respond.

    Should Avro re-introduce the 504?

Rolls Royce Merlins were recycled Nissans.

    Was Elvis homosexual?

Do things really go better with Coke? Didn’t do a damned thing for my car when I tried it.

And so on…there must be other equally dubious subjects out there, and volunteers are now being called for a good old fashioned stoush. If it can be international, so much the better.

Thanks for the thought – yeah, I would get to watch the latest videos, but the last time I flew to the UK, (in fact, the only time) I got to watch Stuart Bloody Little – an animated rat or some such, and Jim Carey, who makes me puke. I preferred to watch the flight recorder.

Good luck to the lot of yez – it sounds like a great idea and I hope it works out ok.

    I’ll still be sulking though!

    RE: RAF serial numbers

    Guys

Thanks for the info so far. I’m intrigued by the attempt to confuse the enemy by omitting large blocks of numbers. How could this have worked – what would the purpose have been? Basically, how would the Germans have applied any knowledge regarding serial numbers?

It seems a bit “airy-fairy” to me. Any ideas?

Also, any idea when each series changed (from Z9999 to AA100?)
