exmpa is correct, even fly pasts are a no no untill the permit is issued. Believe it or not those who made it onto Brunty by paying a fiver were running the risk of having test flights cancelld by the C.A.A. because it constitues a public event.

As I said speaking from experience, I have been on a Permit Test Flight, in a large multi engined warbird, which did one pass down a runway, which was not point of departure / arrival, in front of a group of people with full knowledge of the CAA.

We were advised in no uncertain terms that if we did anything else we would be in big trouble, and yes they were watching.

Does a flypast count a display?

    No.

    Thanks Paul,

But that doesn’t really answer the question. The question is “whats changed” They (TVOC) were telling us that they were hoping to display the Vulcan at Cosford on Sunday after a test flight on the Friday before. There is no way that she would have had her permit, but they say that she could have displayed, if she’d had her test flight. Now she’d had her test flight, but she cant display until she’s got the permit. So, like I said… Whats changed?

Speaking from experience it is quite conceivable that the Vulcan could have done a flypast at Cosford without a permit. There is a big difference between a flypast and a display.

Most parts are still available. Deltair airmotive hold the type responsibility. Other Companies, such as Vintech are also able to carry out overhauls.

Skytrade in Devon have a large stock of parts (both consumable and rotable), LAS also hold most of the common gaskets used on checks.

A commercial rebuild is very expensive; think north of £30k if your core is deemed BER.:eek:

Vulcan internal fuel capacity is 74,000 lbs.

    30 – 40k is therefore roughly a 45 – 50% fuel load.

    Flipflopman

Ahh thanks for that. I thought 30-40 k was in kilograms, which I guessed would be full tanks.

Still a lot of money in any language:eek:

It looks ok at the moment for the remaining flight test as planned.

My informant tells me that DT as asked for a very light fuel load around 30 to 40 k so this will not be enough for the DA flights the main objective is to get it off test i suspose this will free up any funds that may be left in the kitty for other things.

No doubt smiler can confirm this for you all.

    Best of luck

Whats the capacity of the Vulcan then?

I would have thought 30 to 40 tonne would be pretty much full tanks (depending on config).

Thos Metors? I think i’ve been on holiday there.:p

I have noticed there seems to be a couple of posters on here, whose posts may contain all the right letters, but not necessary in the right order. (With apologies to Eric Morecombe).:D

The wind sock was horizontal all day and about 30 degrees off runway heading.
Spent the morning doing a few odd jobs in the hangar and watching a couple of Tomahawks in the circuit, which was hair raising enough:eek: 😮 😮

Hoping to make it with G-AISA.

Weather reports don’t look too promising sadly. 🙁

Looks like another day tinkering in the hangar then!

Is there any vantage point to see the Belfast from a public road?

I am visiting a business on Aviation Way on Tuesday and was wondering if it is possible to peak over the fence at her.

Looking at the people in firefighters gear she may be powered up again today. Question for those with technical knowledge.
Could yesterdays faults have been simply corrected and she be on her way up again for a test this afternoon?
Just aware that we were told it was a just a microswitch and a couple of minor snags with the avionics. Wouldn’t you take her up to test the avionics? The gear I accept you could do on the ground.

As Lindy said gear would be adjusted and functioned on the ground.
Avionic snags are tested with the relevant bit of test equipment so no need to test fly.

I think 558 was painted foc by a paint company towards the end of its service with the VDF, as a ‘trial’ hence the slightly glossy scheme.

Ball park guestimate you are looking around £70-80k to repaint her commercially.

Just out of interest was the Vulcan ever approved to carry out a three engined ferry.

Bruce – The reality is that it costs a conservative 50K a month to have her sat on the ground.

In reality it shouldn’t cost anything like this to keep an aircraft of this size and complexity on care and maintenance per month.

I suspect what is killing it is the hangarage cost’s.

Based on the figures I have read (and have been widley quoted) are correct, even from a commercial point of view they are way to expensive.

They need to move it to a friendly RAF base.

    Hi Flipflopman

Thanks for taking the time to explain the situation. I take it then this is a recent development as the piece I quoted from the website was from last months Engineering update.

Do you know if the engineers will be given any kind of approval by Marshall’s, such as AF /BF? Or will the aircraft have to have Marshall’s Engineers supporting it at airshows?
