I´ve not read the accident report for this accident, and I can´t be bothered to read the journo version. If what you say about the flaps not being correctly set for take off is correctly quoted from the accident report, it is only one of the factors in the accident. What was the aircraft doing so far off the side of the runway, and why did it end up there, instead of going off the end? Why, why why, I can go on for ever with whys.
I cannot see any reference in the report to the aircraft being off the side of the runway. It ran off the end of a 312 metre runway having failed to get airborne due to the flaps being selected up. It continued on until colliding with the F100.
What I don’t understand is why anybody makes it known that they want to take the TRA on, presumably knowing that the Auster Club had already persuaded the previous interested party out of this course of action, then keep us all in limbo for two years and then not bother.
More detailed information on the Auster Club home page.
Just heard from the Auster Club, no TRA has been established so Permit (either CAA or PFA) it is.
Will have to go the long way round now whenever I launch to go north 🙁
Theres another thread on Shacks/Vipers here which details it quite nicely.
Whereabouts is that? Have done a search couldn’t find anything.
Don’t forget that the ex Sandhoft Gannet (XL502) was the most recent flier.
Talking of Gannets, XL500 was a regular ground runner when it was at Culdrose – went to Chatham docks and not sure of current status.
Last I heard XL500 was at North Weald with Kennet, on long term restoration to fly .
Is the Mighty Vanguard at Brooklands still kept in ground running condition?
Didn’t somebody run the Gannet at Newark? It had a near zero time engine in I recall.
Just to correct TwinOtter, the Hastings was run several times in the early eighties (not just ‘turned over’).
Did the Vipers have throttle’s? Or was just a start / run arrangement?
Didn’t the kit from the AEW get flogged off to the Chinese who fitted it to Ilyusion IL76’s
Hi Peter. Thanks for your reply. I was just musing what the Vipers ran on after I posted. I didn’t realise they were adapted to run on AVGAS.
I cannot imagine the noise of all four Griffons and two Vipers at max chat 😮 😮
Are there any plans to restore the Vipers, assuming they are installed?
I think this aircraft was part of the Engineering Officers Training Flight at Cranwell. I remember a vist there many years ago. It was complete and immaculate then.
I remember the guy that showed us round saying that they had done a lot of work, including replacing all the hydraulics, as it was supposed to be going to the RAF Museum.
The tail section was retained, and used to be in one of the workshops at Cranwell.
A real shame it didn’t make it to the museum, as they don’t have a B(1)8 anymore.:(
Is the old museum building still there?
I visited the airport recently and drove down the lane where I thought it used to be and it appears to have been demolished.
I have been following this story on another aviation forum.
They were actively campaigning against this plan, as it meant the complete destruction of the airfield.
