From what I understand XL500 was kept in a operational condition, eg sytem and engine runs whilst it was stored at Culdrose, with the intention one day that it would be restored to flying condition.
However, a change of Station Comander who was less than simpathetic to the cause and it had to go. Hence its move to Chatham. I think this was about 3 or 4 years ago.
I had a good look at it in 02 and I had the feeling it would not take to much work to put it back in the air (providing you had a serviceable Double Mamba in your garage that is).

Perhaps a Seafire/Sea Fury duo and Tempest/Sea Fury duo is very much a possibility then for Legends 🙂M
No, I think the best combination would be Seafire / Sea Fury and Tempest II / Tempest V 😮

It was out ground running a couple of weeks ago.
I understand the Seafire has been booked for Legends. 🙂

How flyable do you reckon she is, Joe?
Off the top of my head a lot closer than 502.
Here’s a picture of XL500 currently residing at Chatham Historic Dockyard 😉
Thanks Peter.
Should have read the website a bit more closely, I will check back when you have updated the ‘Shack’ pages.
Do they still have the Vipers fitted? Having all six running would be some noise!!!
Yes well done Peter, obviously a lot of hard work as gone in to the restoration of the aircraft, and all the more remarkable whebn you consider both aircraft were dismantled and moved by road.
Are you planning any open days in 04 when the aircraft are going to be run?
FL200
I think its ‘G-AKYA’.
It looks like a Prince, I don’t know what reg YV-P-? is though.
There is some very small writing on the tail of the York, can’t find a magnifying class at the moment!
It could be early fifties as I suppose, they moved from Tollerton to Wymeswold around then.
The hangar is still there, sadly its empty now.
A busy scene at Field Aircraft Services Tollerton facility in the late forties.
Don’t know what happened to the Proctors.
The Hastings at Newark is a T5 and was one of the last four operated by 230 OCU at Scampton, unoficially known as ‘1066 Flight’.
It was retired in 1977 along with the other three;
TG503 – Gatow, Berlin (have a feeling it may have been moved).
TG505 – I think this one ended up as a SAS ‘training aid’ Hereford.
TG511 – RAF Museum Cosford
TG517 – Newark Air Museum
Duxford has C.1A TG528, which was moved by road from Staverton. Although its looking a little weather beaten these days, it is in very good condition having been extensivly restored throughout the late eighties / early nineties.
There was a further preserved Hastings at the RAF Colerne museum, but when the museum closed it moved to the fire school at Catterick. I think it was this aircraft which donated its wings to Friday 13th.
According to my copy of Aircraft of the RAF (1976 edition) 146 aircraft were produced.
I understand that the plan is to operate her from RAF Finingley – sorry Finingley International or whatever its going to be called if and when she is restored.
Possibly a bit tenuous, however, as we have had a picture of a Lightning and it started with the Catalina, how about a picture of a Lightning taken out the cockpit window of a Catalina!

I went to a CAA safety evening recently, the chap introduced himself as; my name is John Smith from the CAA, thats The Campaign for the Advancement of Aviation!!!
Sniggers from the room all round
I don’t think its 1986 as she was out of commision that year having the port wing re-spared.
More likley 1985. I would agree with Dav though it doesnt look like Finningley as its pretty flat around the airfield.
She was based at Barkston Heath in those days.
I think there will be a rather nice Seafire up and about next year;)
