If I was walking out of the office with job today and needed to build an airforce on a limit budget I would start with a 20 year plan

    Today

40 Mirage F1 MF2000’s with the new RDY-3 radar and weapons fit plus Brimstone and Storm shadow added and A2A refuelling probe
20 Hawk T2 with the ability to carry Brimstone
20 Super T’s for COIN and Training
5 C130E’s of which 2 need to be able to carry out A2A refuelling
    5 C295 MPA
    5 C295M
    4 E-2 Hawkeye AEWaC
    5 Chinooks
    15 Mil-17 with the ramp
    2 757 MRTT’s

    Future

Look at 5th gen options post 2020 to replace F-1’s by 2030
Look at replacement E-2’s post 2025
Start a rolling replacement of older air frames post 2020 I.e C130’s

At this time the Australian’s have a number of projects that will run from 2015 to 2030 but some of them seem too much for the perceived threat level. When looking at what they are thinking of ordering it seem over the top. So when we look at the projects

    72 F-35’s to replace the F-18 A/B @ $130m each
    8 P-8 Poseidon’s @ $199m each
    7 Global Hawk’s @ $104m each
    12 new Submarines
And a need to replace the Navy’s frigates

Given the threat level and the need to be mobile and work with Allies (US)

I would firstly drop the order of F-35’s to 50 and order 25 more F-18 F’s giving me 50 of each type and 100 combat jets in total and saving me 1.5 billion dollars

Second I would order 7 P-8 Poseidon’s saving me another 200 million dollars

Third I would order 10 C295 MPAs instead of the 7 Global Hawks as this will give me more flexibility in the MPA and SAR roles and would save me 278 million dollars

Forth I would build 8 new advanced Collins class submarines able to carry up to 28 weapons and able to launch Tomahawk missiles

Instead of the 4 remaining submarines and with the nearly 2 billion dollars saved by the changes I would buy 8 Type 26 Frigates from the UK and with the money saved by all the changes and not having to spend 4 billion dollars on the 8 Type 26’s taking that 4 billion I would spend 1.5 billion on 3 more Type 26’s bring the number up to 11 to go with the 3 Hobart class destroyers

The type 26 from the UK would be good option buy 9 fit 3 for AAW role and the other 6 fitted for general purpose. As for the Subs buy 8 diesel subs have 6 crews and aim to have 4 to 5 operational at any one time these need to be back up by good MPA’s and given Australia’s coast I feel a mix of C295 and P-8 would be better than P-8 and Global hawk as C295 can carry out Maritime patrol and SAR roles

This is the first I have herd of this not saying its not true but I never known anyone say this before my dad was in RAF Fighter force in the 70’s and he never said anything of the sort and I think its the sort of thing that gets around plus I know a lot of RAF pilots never once has it come up

sorry been away sitting on a beech with a beer watching Greek F-16s working hard they don’t seem to be cutting back on ops. As for Poland if it was me I would replace the 32 SU-22’s with 20 F-16’s and then put 25 of the Mig-29’s to include 3 2 seater’s though a full upgrade with US avionics for the A2A role with US A2A weapons so both fleets could use the same weapons or replace the SU-22’s with 18 Typhoons a view to the early replacement of the Mig-29 fleet with another 18 Typhoons which already use the same A2A weapons

we all talk of the future I asked should Mig design a single engine fighter using parts and avionics already around well maybe Serbia should look to spend its money on going in with Mig and build the production line in Serbia it has a aircraft industry ?

    Key quote

The new weapon will be integrated with its frontline Gripens next year as part of the type’s so-called “Version 19” software update

Yes Yes and those frontline Gripen’s were C’s the B was reworked as a test bed as not to use frontline aircraft the same as BAE did with Tornado F-3 for Meteor testing

I like the look of the G-4 upgrade that is a good first step I have to say I still think Mig-29 is over kill for the job in hand and JF-17 is a better option in the long term as this will also a development path over the next 20+ years that is well in side Serbian industry which means they can get the kits the same as Pakistan and under take final fit

these are western weapons that are not all on the A/B and we are talking about a firmly eastern European state

I feel second hand Gripen A/B would cost the same as new JF-17’s and if that is the case then new JF-17’s would be the way to go more freedom in weapons

That’s right as said what they need now is J-7’s which if fitted with double ejectors on the inside hard points could carry up to six PL-9 -AIM-9 and a drop tank on the centre line or 4 AAM and 3 drop tanks all they need right now is an interceptor and updated G-4’s for LIFT limited attack

Its looking like they would be better off at this time doing what the Bangladesh air force has done and picking up 16 or so J-7 in the same speck for a interceptor limited strike platform then update 16 G-4’s with glass cockpits as lead in trainers light attack
