What would be of interest would be to ask any of the pilots on this forum what they would be able to own (as opposed to what they would like to fly).

I think I can answer that one for you! I always wanted a Hurricane. That’s a machine I really want to fly. But I can not afford it. You do not find rebuildable Hurricanes, or even replicas in the price range I can afford. And I do not consider myself as a poor guy

What do I end up with? I ended up with a really sexy, historic GA twin, the Miles Gemini. True, it will cost me an awful amount of work (about 15 years ๐Ÿ˜€ ), it will cost an awful amount of money, probably about 250.000 Pounds Sterling. It will sell for maybe 100.000 as a finished flying article. But it is Mine, ALL mine so I don’t care. Besides, the rebuilding is just a great fun (ok if you skip all the less than pleasant experiences ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) My greatest fear at the moment is, that once it is finished, I will not get any fuel for the Gipsys ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

The moral of the story is, I couldn’t afford what I really wanted (a Hurricane) so I went for something different. I did not go and build some 3/4 something that does not really look the part, and certainly does not have ‘soul’ of the real thing.

I always thought it was a shame that most PPLs I speak to have only ever done three solo cross country trips at the time that they pass. Would their instructor have let them do more if they had asked?

    Janie,
I think it is more a question of money. When I was instructing (ok, it was some years ago, and in a different country), I was trying to get people to do just that, fly on their own and get experience in a ‘relatively’ sheltered atmosphere. Problem was, they all wanted to finish with the lowest possible hours. For some reason they all thought that flying would be SO much more inexpensive once the PPL was theirs. So trying to get someone to do something that was not the absolutely minimum neccesary was a pain, and most would not do it.

You are spot on there David!

We can all make up our minds, personally, regarding the Vulcan’s (former?) owner after seeing that picture. To publicly assult on an open forum is uncalled for, and could probably be heaven for the the lawers.

Ohh, I see what you mean!

Actually, I do not think it is a ‘trend’ to design single- or dual seat private aircraft with jet fighter performance. There are just two designs, I remember of the top of my head. It’s the Javelin, the link for which is above, and the ill fated BD-10 of the early ’90’s. The BD10 was, IIRC, a Mach 1.2 design that was shelfed after the prototype crashed due to flutter problems. Apparently some redesign work has been done, and it is waiting in the wings for a renewed live with a new engine. See here.

Drawing of a BD10 Please note that this template is since 1994.

Ok, I got it wrong guys ๐Ÿ˜ฎ It’s not AH numbers that Skypilot, among others, had put together. Itยดs Manufacturers Part Codes. If you want to have a look at it, try here

    Sorry about the mix-up guys

Galdri, my gut feeling and (limited in regard to aircraft engines) mechanical knowledge tells me you’re right although I have no personal experience to refer to.

Referring to Bomberboy’s extremely unpleasant post, I sincerely hope it can be proved you ARE right.

    Thanks for that dhfan.

I think I know, more or less, how a piston engine with full feathering prop works. I have, however, no desire to enter in a flame war with someone who knows it all so much better, and has even seen an engine running with the prop in feather. ๐Ÿ™

    Dear Mr. Patterson,

I’ve been looking at your photos here on Key. If you ever need a pilot, drop me a line. Have high performance (-ish) taildragger rating. Will travel.

    Regards,

I’ll go for a La-9 with nitro, and clipped wings. Nothing can catch it at low level :diablo: ๐Ÿ˜€ Bearcats and Seafuries can stay at home :diablo:

    Bomberboy,

I bow to your superior knowledge!

I do not know the first thing about engines

A couple of months ago, there was a thread running here about the subject. IIRC, Skypilot62 and Bruce between them had make a complete list of all AH numbers. However, try as I might with the search function, I’m not able to find it. Maybe someone less computer challanged can have a go dragging up that thread.

(Daz’s lightbulb appears over his head – hmmm… would make an interesting replica! :D)

Well go ahead Daz. Make a replica ๐Ÿ˜€ After all, it’s only some timber and plywood that is needed, ohhh and a Merlin, but they are not too hard to find anyway! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€ :diablo:

Ok! This is not as easy as I thought ๐Ÿ˜€ I used to think my aircraft recognition was up to standard, but I’ll have to scrap that idea ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€

Now to state the obvious (in the hope someone will finish). It is an interwar biplane. It has an engine turning anti- clock-wise as seen from the cockpit, which rules out the engine being german. The Tail is high set on the fuselage, probably as high or higher than the cockpit with a V-brace struts on the undersite and wires on the top surface. It also has a gun-sight for the front cockpit which would probably make it a fighter-trainer.

I thought it Might be a two seat Gloster Gauntlet. But I’m wrong. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
