the Americans only just won the space race… it was a lot closer then you might think..
the Soviets could have landed people on the moon, they almost did. the Americans took a huge gamble with the manned Appollo missions. while the USSR wasnt so keen to take the risk. i think it was more luck then judgement the gamble worked for the Americans.
while the Americans was landing probes on Mars, the USSR was doing the same on Venus. with a surface temp of 800 degrees and with air presure 95 times that on earth and it rains sulphuric acid.. landing a probe on venus in one peice, and send back pictures. is no mean feat.
if the Soviet Union had not dissolved, they would be using Buran by now.. so Amercas victory in the space race, wasnt that overwelming… 🙂
enyway i dont think the BUFF or Bear quite had the legs to get to the moon, though with inflight refeulling and a stand by crew, they might have got there, without runways they would have had a big problem getting down though…… 😀 😀 😀 😀
