Damien – that reminds me, we’re tidying  the house to sell it and I came across my collection of William Gibson – four books all in a row so to speak – can’t remember the titles except “Burning Chrome”. I think they’re about due for a reread.

As to what I am reading – the April edition of Mojo magazine (why do magazines come out a month early?). It’s got a feature on Ian Curtis and Joy Division. He topped himself 25 years ago this May. I really am getting old :p Fascinating in depth article, really great – all you JD fans, go get this mag.

Very interesting article, but I’m not sure it is 100% accurate. The two Halifaxes mentioned as surviving in Norway as LN-OAS and OAT never made it here. According to “Norwegian Civil A/C since 1919” they were reserved for Vingtor Luftveier AS of Oslo, but this company ceased operations around July 1948. The planes, still at Hendon became G-AJCG and G-ALEF.

Oh dear – can’t we rely on HP to get their facts straight …

And thanks for looking Robbo – appreciated.

Thanks Robbo – by any chance have you (or others) got a photo of that nose art?

And Flood – I am aware of the YAM replica and sure as hell would like to see it, but better than that I want to go see the Canadian restoration when it’s complete – there’s a thread about it somewhere around here.

    cheers, D

Huh – what a damn shame it is that the Halifax was overlooked in the post-war scrap scramble. Off on a related tangent – can someone please post a quick precis about Friday the 13th? I’ve seen the photo of it on display in some city centre, but that’s fundamentally all I know about it.

And thank God for those lads in Canada !!!

Fan-bloody-tastic. I’d love to have them on my shelf! Perhaps someone could build a full scale replica of either and take it to … (that event)

Very interesting – and can you imagine 850kph (530mph) in a 109! Holy sh!t. As with all warbirds (speaking without any experience whatsoever  i.e. relying on what I’ve learned) it seems the real issue is to become familiar enough with your aircraft that you’re controlling it – then it’s yours. Those in the know care to comment?

And re. the wings (Andy you’ll be up on this), Len Deighton in his book “Fighter” (see thread elsewhere) referring to E models makes the observation that there was a perception that the wings were fragile and this caused (some) pilots to be too cautious in their handling of the aircraft. In point of fact the 109 could turn with the best of ’em if you were prepared to push the limits. Of course in an overspeed dive things would break, but that’s true of any aircraft. And don’t tell me about all those gun camera images of 109’s getting shot up and wings breaking off – first reflect on where the wing cannon magazines were.

How do you pronounce potato? American or English way 😀
    Tomato

    In English …
Potato = poh-tay-toh (‘po’ and ‘to’ should sound the same, like the 5 things on your foot)
    Tomato = tom-ah-toh

    In American …
ask SRP, or Rob (CM), or the Bird (CB)

HP57, I’m probably not telling you anything you didn’t know, but I did a google search and found the following …

The first civilian conversion [of a Halifax] was of the Halifax BIII, NR169 Waltzing Matilda, ex 466 (RAAF) Squadron. This aircraft was bought by G. N. Wickner, a wartime ferry pilot with the Air Transport Auxiliary, and converted by Handley Page to carry 15 passengers. Carrying the civil registration G-AGXA, the Halifax was flown to Australia in June 1946, piloted by Wickner and carrying 15 other Australians who were returning home. For a short period this machine flew in Australia as VH-BDT.

Served with RAAF 466 Sqn under RAF control 10/45. 51 ops “Kelly Gang” & latter “Waltzing Matilda” G-AGXA to Oz by Capt G.N.Wickner.

Well….up until a few weeks ago, the piccies of me and the missus on my Harley while in Cyprus had been my desktop for the past 3 years.

    Hey there Geedee

I’m a V-twin man myself, but mine’s a Duc. And I understand the sell-it pressures 😎 . Assuming you live in the UK (?), how’d you get the Harley to Cyprus? Did you ride it on down? Got to say Cyprus looks like a biking paradise – or do you have to deal with maniac bus drivers? :p

    cheers, Don
