No idea on the plane, but could the engine be an Argus AS10? The cowling and prominent push rods look similar.
Seeing as they are in the possession of the last remaining one, I’d suggest that The Duxford Aviation Society are a good place to start.
Is that not the PB4Y wreck whose sidescan sonar image has been claimed to show everything from a Sunderland to a Stirling, from Windermere to Norway?
If its the one I think it is -with the inboard engines missing- I’ve seen it claimed as a Heinkel 177. 😮 Not idea where that particular image originates from.
Anyway, back to Lake Washington. Looks to be an interesting body of water with a lot of history on the bottom. Looking at the map closely they have a Corsair, Wildcat and Mariner in there too.
It crashed on take-off and was written off in October 4th ’87. Fortunately there were no injuries.
I think you’ll find the Mk.23 Valiant was produced, albeit in only prototype form (PP139).
.
If you want to make a kit version you’ll be best to start with the Mk 21 (like they did with the real thing). Raise the leading edge of the wings two scale inches (if you want). Add a bigger tail (thanks Dave) and finally add extended wingtips. Been pondering this as a model for a while. Just the surprising lack of affordable starter Spitfire kits out there has been a stumbling block.
I have often seen Mk XII conversion kits on Ebay. And also you are forgetting Trumpeter’s new Spiteful and Seafang kits.
I really do wish someone had managed to capture a photo of that rude feat.
Um, by what definition would you define a seperate aircraft type?
A B-50 or Avro Lincoln are just souped up B-29s and Avro Lancasters respectively with more powerful engines. So by that definition would you class Griffon engined Spits as a seperate type to their Merlin engined forebears? (Of course forgetting Supermarine’s own type numbers.)
Are we to suppose that all aircraft properly designed, that might have had a chance of being built, are know of today, that the records of their existance haven’t been lost or destroyed?
Would aircraft designed and built before the Wright Brothers (or the amateur flops afterwards) be counted as well despite their non-success?
I could raise other objections but that would be long-winded, and more knowledgeable could raise even more. I suspect strongly that this is a fool’s errand, even if you can get a broad agreement as to what constitutes an aircraft type.
Your guess is as good as any.
Kermit Weeks won’t be too happy with you.
What did you cut it from? 😀
Nice to see a navy jetstream preserved. Shame the FAAM don’t have one too.
I would agree there but that doen’t look much like a radial engine. So is there really two aircraft there posed to give the impression of one going through the memorial? A CR42 tail and a CR32 nose?
THanks, an interesting set – I take it the original plan to only half restore the Hampden has been replaced with a better one?
I really, really, really hope this is the case too. Can anyone confirm this?
Milestones to my mind is odd. It would be great just to have the aircraft housed by era, showing the progression of aviation technology from the early days of RFC then into the RAF and up to the modern age.
And painted up as a Fortress III the RAFM’s B-17 would look very different than the usual 8th AF yawn that B-17s usually end up as.
(source) That would be s simple conversion, right? And as a WWII type the B-17 is rather well represented so hopefully not so many howls of vandalism for adding that radome and arial?.
Then we could perhaps get the Liberator done up in Coastal Command decor?
I do remember there being a sunken Messerschmitt Bf 110 in an scene of Bergerac in the episode ‘Late For a Funeral’ (according to Wiki). Any idea where that was (probably not Jersey, but who knows) and what the current status of the wreck is? Or was it just a prop?
Yep, it has already been posted. Well not the DM article, that is new.
Dear Santa can you make it so the Norwegians can fish a complete Junkers 188 out of one of their fjords, please.
P.S. Thank you for the Heinkel 115 I wished for last year. :p
