    Is there any new inputs concerning the operational cost of the F35?
    The last time I checked, due to the massive maintenance cost, even if you get the F35 for free it would be much more costly than any Super Hornet, rafale or Eurofighter once you include the operational costs.

    FBW has this one right. The Canadians will kick the can for the next few years once the new govt carries out an analysis of the alternatives. Extending the Hornet’s life to 2025 only strengthened the F-35’s case (might have been designed to do so).

    Super Hornet: Only fractionally cheaper than the F-35. Out-of-production: OEM will not mothball the production line to 2022 – overhead would be staggering.

    Strike Eagle: Pricier than the F-35 for a new user. Will also be out-of-production.

    Rafale: Cost similar to (if not higher than) the F-35. Reduced interoperability with US forces. Offers option of ‘Canadianization’ (refer India wrt costs).

    Eurofighter: Same as above. Likely to be out-of-production.

    Leaving only the single-engined Gripen E and F-35A.

    Same as in Norway, Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Denmark and (in the future) Poland, except of course that the RCAF is responsible for a far larger country, and has a closer relationship with the USAF. Lets see what Finland, Belgium & Denmark decide, Trudeau may soon be facing some unappealing choices.

    The point is that those EOTS are hardly ever going to be used before they are being replaced… Concurrency, you know.

    ‘Concurrency’ applies to the LRIP aircraft being retrofitted to an FRP build. Operators flying a Blk 3F fighter, have no obligation to upgrade the EOTS, and can and will continue operating it through the next decade as well. The system will continue to be supported by the OEM.

    A better place for them might be a VLO conformal pod on the wing stations since they are already wired.

    Why wing stations exactly? Would make more sense to customize the ‘multi-mission pod’ for the centre-line hardpoint.

    The spine makes more sense to me, because the cable would be less likely to foul up the control surfaces/tailplane, if the pilot was forced to dive/climb. Plus, it would have a smaller impact on the RCS and handling (no change to the frontal signature, no asymmetrical air flow).

    According to the Norwegian defense ministry, Dolby has more than 2,200 hours in the F-16, is a U.S. Navy Test Pilot School graduate and now serves as an instructor with the 62nd Fighter Squadron, an F-35 training unit, at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.War is Boring

    That may explain quite a bit. I’m betting unlike the unnamed pilot from the memo (with ‘exposure’ to the F/A-18F), Dolby has likely done some significant training on the Hornet and/or Rhino.

    Also, perhaps the recommendations made in the report might have been applied last year, and the FCS suitably modified, to the satisfaction of operational pilots like Dolby.

    On a different note, being an F-15 pilot, it seems the original pilot wasn’t as perturbed by the buffet issue –

    Buffet & Transonic Rolloff (TRO)

    Despite concerns early in the program regarding buffet, it was not found to be detrimental during this mission. It was actually favorable when encountered because it provided a great cue of energy, similar to the F-15. Buffet was never encountered with the bandit on-axis and off-axis symbology was steady regardless of buffet level.

    The ALE-70 for the F-35 was either canceled or more likely never planned.. ie a typo.

    There is simply no place for it on the F-35.

    You could arguably locate it on the tail/spine, where the drag chute is planned for Norway.

    Will “White Tigers” reform later on MIG-29s?

    Probably already in the process of conversion. The follow-on order for 29 MiG-29K was placed in 2010 (first 16 MiGs ordered in 2004). They should have taken enough deliveries by now to equip a second squadron.

    Sweden has 4 div of Gripen, just up from 3, operating from 4 main bases (note Ärna too outside Uppsala) and additional 6 forward bases.

    There’s no permanent fighter basing at Arna since the Uppsala wing was decommissioned in 2003 (link).

    Also, the F-35 is not required to operate from its peacetime bases in war.

    Not really. IF they buy Rafale for nuclear strike then it should be quite obvious that they will integrate their own stuff. So lack of ASMP/A export is not relevant.

    Their own equivalent is.. or rather will be, a missile with a range of 1000 km for the TEL-launched variant, and probably 500 km+ for the air-launched variant. Or possibly a BrahMos with a nuclear payload. In either case, the platform of choice will the Su-30MKI not the Rafale.

    The nuclear angle is just something that’s been floated as an explanation for the mounting absurdity and ballooning cost of the Rafale deal. There’s no real evidence or even logic to support it.

    Not really. It only debunks that ASMP/A missile won’t be exported.

    Yes really. Unless the idea is to integrate a nuclear variant of a Nirbhay ALCM missile (primary launch platform: Su-30MKI), onto the Rafale. A far fetched notion of no exceptional utility.

    You said it “was never tested in India’s hot and humid coastal areas”. I pointed out that was unimportant, as the P-8 was tested in similar conditions. You may have meant to say that India never tested it in those conditions before buying it, but that wasn’t what you said. It’s best to explain when you get replies to what you say, not what you’re thinking.

    That’s what was being discussed in that particular section. The reference was to the IN’s P-8 testing, a description of which was quoted in my post here, which Austin was responding to.

    The Swedish Air Force operates 90 fighters from three airbases. That’s an average of 30 fighters per airbase.

    Why should we base close to 10% of the jets in USA? They do not contribute to our defense nor economy or local know how!
    Our staff will have a really nice time over there! Where would you like to go, Florida or your neighbouring country?

    F-35 customers have no obligation to send jets over to the USA. (AFAIK no Korean, Israeli or Japanese F-35s are being based abroad.) Of the countries opting for such an arrangement, many already send their personnel for training to such locations. (Dutch fighter pilots for example are trained at Tucson, Arizona). This allows them to train on their own aircraft as well as participate in sophisticated large scale local training exercises without having to cross the Atlantic twice. And if operational conditions require it, those aircraft can very much be relocated to their home states.

    What you are missing is that radar pulses have duration.

    It would be impossible for a purely reactive active cancellation system to achieve 100% efficacy, but there is no paradox problem with a hypothetical system that could react within the duration of a single pulse. The question of course would be just how much of a pulse it could cancel, how effectively it nullified the pulse while it operated, and of course how much it overshot the pulse after the pulse ended.

    The jamming aircraft would still need to record, analyse, decrypt and then transmit a very precise out-of-phase pulse in the time it takes the transmitter to switch its pulse frequency or waveform. Doable against older generation radars perhaps, but against the newer PESAs and more specifically frequency agile AESAs…? I remain sceptical.

    The difference between the P-8I & P-8A isn’t significant in this context. P-8 is what matters. The differences in fit-out will not have enough impact on performance in different temperatures & humidities for anyone to bother about. Therefore, the USN’s testing of the P-8 is absolutely relevant.

    The context had nothing to do with the difference between the P-8A and P-8I.

    This is what I posted:

    The Indian Navy evaluated the P-8 in June 2007 on basis of demonstrations carried out by Boeing at in Seattle. A leased -800 for flight trials, a C-40 for handling trials with the mission systems tested on a P-3 platform. After making its observations, the IN declared the aircraft ‘technically compliant’, which was then followed by contract negotiations and thereafter contract signature, thus proving the original point i.e. local flight trials are not mandatory under MoD regulations and the the determination of technical compliancy for any system, is left to the concerned service’s judgement.

    Out of curiosity, how did the Mig-29K/35 fare on the high temp/altitude tests?

    No idea. I don’t think the MiG-29K was even tested at high altitude. The MiG-35 probably did fine. May have faced issues with elaborate testing restrictions – single engine, no afterburner, full fuel, X tons payload… you get the idea. But for all practical purposes, its a perfectly viable option.

    We know the IAF has operated its old MiG-29s from Leh in the past.
