Here are a couple of videos from Saturdays Flying legends The originals look fine but YouTube must be using very heavy compression so they are a bit blocky.

Hi all , Nice video Mauld & great display by Jonathon.
Steve
Hello Mackrel,
Ralph was pulling his hair out after all the work that was required 😉 Structurally they’re done, and very nice they are too. As you well know the skinning is the ‘easy’ bit, making all those ribs and leading-edge skins is the awkward and really time-consuming part.
Tom
Hi Tom, yes you’re right the wings are never nice to build, structure is a nightmare !!! skinning is the easy bit like you say. Give me a fuse any day.:)
Steve.
P.S P9374 going to HFL next wednesday .
The wings were still without skins when I saw them a week ago…
Tom
Hi Tom, Really!! I thought Ralph had nearly finished them !!!! John Hart must be pulling his hair out by now then.
Steve.
An old topic that I bring back to the top.
Anybody have any news about the completion ?
good point there TGA. We did the fuse about 4years ago so an update would be nice !!!
Steve.
Oh well, here goes I hope to bolt the carry through wing spars to the firewall soon….hence I need some bolts, the 1/4 inch ones that hold the carry thru spars to the firewall/Frame 5 (not the wing bolts that attach the wing spar to firewall carry thru spars….does anyone know the size and a source? It is a static so someone with some originals would be even nice….fingers and everything crossed!!!
Hi Rocketeer, I measured those bolts as promised and as Chumpy said they are A25-41E’s. good luck !!
Steve.
Is this the Mk1?.. taken at Sandown a couple of weeks back.
Chumpy
Well done that man ! ! She lookes far more complete now .
Steve.
While I’m sure Mackerel and others can offer a more detailed response, I suspect the main reason is that HFL’s early restorations were of generally complete Spitfires – the main structures were all present and intact. They could be, for example, placed in the fuselage jig, the skins removed, the underlying structure repaired, and the fuselage reskinned.
The newer restorations are starting off with much smaller portions of original structure – necessitating new frames, longerons, stringers etc. Airframe Assemblies have all of the jigs and forms to make these parts, so they are contracted to do the work. I would expect that the Burmese Mk.IX, which is an ex-display airframe, would be done largely in-house.
Hi Eddie cant argue with that!
Steve.
Yes it’s there (with HFL)
The rebuilt fuselage just returned from the Isle of Wight
Hi Mr Tipsy thanks for putting the world right by saying PL983 fuse was rebuilt on the Isle of Wight. Some people think that HFL do it all ! ! It was Airframe Assemblies 7th Spit fuselage rebuild. We have just finished our 8th fuse and that will be at HFL in a week or so.
Steve
Sorry, that will teach me for not being specific!! I did not mean those (wing)bolts (and yes I did know about oversize etc, non-interchangeability and the fire wall plates)…..I meant the bolts that go through the spars, spacer castings and the firewall/fr5:)
Hi Rocketeer,I guess you mean the 1/4 dia bolts that hold the carry through spars to fr5 ? When i go to work tomorrow i’ll measure the length for you. If you want the real thing then they are A25,s but a cheaper option would be A102,s which are a unified thread. Companys like LAS aero spares could help you ! or alternativly as its a static try your local hardware shop !
Steve.
Oh yes there are!…(see also the posting from Mackerel in the ‘Spotted’ thread).
Seems to be for a forthcoming TV prog involving MH434 up against one of the Red Bull air race ‘Extras’.
Pylon erected at Sandown airport, mucho air to air stuff with heli-telly equipped choppers, around the island, over the Needles etc.
All will be revealed in due course no doubt.
Chumpy.
Hi all , Thanks Chumpy for putting newforest right. Members of this forum do exist on the Isle of Wight ! !
Paul Bonhomme was in MH434 & Nigel Lamb in the extra. The program being made had something to do with schnider ( ! ) air races. I’m sure will become apparent .
Steve.
looks like paul day, john romain and carolyn grace are the pilots
I thought it was Anthony Hodgson, John Romain & Carolyn Grace .
Steve.
Well, if they care not for the living, nor for the dead, then maybe they should allow people who still do care, to seek out those still missing from WWII.
Hi Mondariz , take Mark Kirby for example , he was arrested for doing the right thing but with out MOD permission. This was a dig on sergent John Guilders Spitfire in kent that he did knowingly that there might be human remains on the site. He did this with the families approval & that of the land owner. He was charged with digging up human remains but later let of with a slapped wrist. Tangmere 1940 knows all about this.
If you want a good read then get the book entitled “Missing in action- Reasting in peace? ” by Dilip Sarkar.
Sergent Guilders was given a full military burial at brookwood military cemetry.
Steve.
Hi, doe’s anyone have the dimensions of a spitfire Mk1 cockpit (High backed), my Dad is thinking about building me one for my flight simulator games.
Thanks
TT18
Hi canberra-tt18, the internal diamentions for a MK1 spitfire are the same as any other spitfire. What diamentions are you after?
Steve
MH434 at Sandown airport ,Isle of wight
Hi all, MH434 arrived at sandown airport about 1500hrs today. Its doing photo shoots tomorrow with Extra redbull racer piloted by Nigel Lamb. Spit pilot is Paul Bonnehom, i think! !
Steve.
Yes, that’s the tip of her nose, looking from the front along to the cockpit opening.
The intention is to rebuild K7 to running condition, and to run her- at low demonstration speeds only of course- at least once, but hopefully as a yearly event. When not wet, she’ll live in a new hall that’s to be built at The Ruskin Museum in Coniston, which already holds all sorts of Campbell memorabilia, including (for now) her original Gnat tail fin and the original engine that came out of her when she was recovered. It’s hoped that Rolls Royce will come on board to re-certify the replacement Orpheus for yay-many hours of ground running at low thrust, which will see K7 good for power for x amount of years.
And all this is being done with no help whatsoever from the Lottery people!
Hi Lancman, i read some where that airframe assemblies on the isle of wight were getting involved with the restoration of this project.
