The only thing this damn country and its politicians are good at, is destroying anything that’s got potential for this country and its future generations. But thats not for this thread/forum.

    Hear hear my thoughts exactly

I suppose we could always spruce up ML796, give her a bit of TLC, operate her from Grafham Water and have our own Southern Section MR/SAR 🙂

Why not bring back all those AEW Shacletons that were sold of base them back at Lossiemouth or even Kinloss in the spot left by the Nimrod MR2s for Northern SAR/MR and bring ‘Just Jane’ back to airworthyness to work alongside PA474 and run the whole thing by the Air Training Corps who are now bigger in manpower than the RAF

i have many fond memories of flying in the old Chipmunk. One in particular was when I was on summer camp at RAF Coningsby, I was lucky enough to get just over an hour in a chippie (will have to dig my 3822 out to find out which one) as the local airspace around Coningsby was shut for a photo shoot with a Tornado F3 and BBMF Spitfire XIX PM631. So had a stooge round all the old wartime bomber airfields and out to Skegness, on the way back to base we got ‘buzzed’ by the Spit and we tried to stay in formation with it meanwhile the spotty cadet sat in the back that was me kept kicking himself for leaving his camera behind in his tent and missed a perfect photo opportunity! Bummer!

I also remember having to constantly move my left leg a lot when we were on the ground to avoid being clobbered by the brake lever! Do they still have this fitted or were they modified with toe brakes?

Er, Yuk – modified ‘Chippies’ 🙁

I heartily agree the lovely old chippy looks awful with that lycoming bolted on to the front! I’m sorry it just aint the same without the gypsy major.

I noticed that if you actually look carefully at the ‘flying’ scenes the footage of ‘jane’ is cleverly mixed in with foootage of PA474 because the mid upper intermittently aquires a gun track. so it maybe that the u/c legs are actually PA474s

Thats great news Peter, an excellent show of respect for a magnificent aircraft and respect for those who flew and gave their lives.

I know the final decision hasnt been made – heres hoping but it is about time that the bean counters in the local planning offices actually listen to the people, if only some councils over here would do the same instead of letting prize airframes suffer badly with irish woodworm, i.e. the Blackpool Vulcan

My apologies to all for not being clear, it was the spinner profiles and the cowling similarities i was commenting on having never noticed the hole in the spinner on a ‘straight machine’. Were there plans to fit the engine mounted cannon to the Zerstorer but never got round to it? and the hole remained? just curious.

It’d work, I’m sure of it.

Why not a Falconer V12? There are plenty of them used in replica spits and stangs.
