There is ‘The Grange’ in Gosport near Portsmouth, apparently the first RAF Squadron was formed at what is now HMS Sultan up the road when the RFC and RNAS amalgamated – or so I have been told, maybe some one could shed more light on ths? The pub crest is a Spitfire and they have aviation pics inside which surprised me as the area is predominately naval.

There is also ‘The Church Fenton’ outside the old RAF base.

I must say I have to agree with the sentiments posted here with regards to the eaterie at hendon. I went in July 03 with the Air Cadet summer camp from RAF Northolt and the general consensus from them all was that the food and facilities was pretty poor. Although when we went the portions were adequate the quality left a lot to be desired and the actual eating area gave the impression of ‘very old works canteen’ and it let down an enjoyable visit

I can see where Warbird UK is coming from when he says ‘one slip oof the brakes and it could end up on its nose’ but that is more for the smaller warbirds like the spitfire, hurricane, bf109, mustang etc but with NX611 the risk of ‘turning turtle’ is lower as she is much larger and the CofG is much further back. I think it would be a lot harder to tip a 40ton bomber than a 3ton(?) spit or messerschmitt. but I also agree wih what hatton is saying there is nothig like standing behind or in front of for that matter the ‘real thing’ rather than listening to a tape or CD of the noise that an aicraft makes

Incidently I have on cassette ‘Lancaster – Operations On’ which I purchased from the visitors centre of the BBMF at Coningsby does any one know if this is available on CD as the tape is worn out from over playing!

Forres Airfield???? Is that what is now RAF Kinloss?

My interest in aviation started as a young boy, my Grandad was in the Army during the Dunkirk evacuation and was on one of the last boats out so that started my interest in WWII. Then my dad took me to RAF Finningley airshow and I found I liked the quieter warbirds best then he bought me an Airfix Lancaster which fuelled my interest in aviation modelling. then after twenty years in the Air Cadets I’m still hooked!

Incidently my grandad died on Dunkirk beaches 36 years later in 1976 whilst on a veterans trip to the area and his picture appeared on issue one of the ‘Images Of War’ partwork magazine about Dunkirk.

I still wish I knew him better, I was only six when he died.

I quite agree about the Chipmunk but still in military service? with who? The RAF and Army Chippies retired in 1996.

My first show was RAF Finningley about 1982. I remember HRH Prince Andrew opened it. My dad took me on a coach trip, the only aircraft I remember were Vulcan XH558, Mossie RR299, BBMF, F4 Phantom and B17 Sally B. I went back in ’91 was still a good show then. I have a photo some where of XH558 flying ‘out of the back’ of the old AEW Nimrod they had there, if I find it I will post it.

My nominations for the jetair liner caregory would have to be Concorde for the simple reason that it was and still is way ahead of its time, I mean who else has built a supersonic jet airliner and made it work for the best part of 30 years apart from the British and maybe the russians (Concordeski). For the same reason I wouldnt have a supersonic airliner category. Also the DH Comet, the worlds first jet airliner whose basic design is flying with the best maritime patrol aircraft – the Nimrod.

Transport would be a toss up between DC3?C47 or C130
The Ju 52 I wouldnt really put in as a nominations for the simple reason How many are still flying commercially and how many DC3/C47s are still flying commercially – I rest my case.

Trainer I would put in the Tiger Moth, Harvard or Chipmunk which was in active service for the best part of 50 years.

Finally how about the Typhoon/ Tempest for ground attack aircraft
