And WAAY more capable. But what Im really looking for, is just how much this fiasco will cost the Indian Navy once/if it is finaly delivered.
In hindsight yes, but at the time of the offer it appeared a cheap way to get a carrier capable of CATOBAR operations whilst awaiting their own ADS to be built. Given the original expectations on costs and delivery schedule then it probably appeared to be value for money.
Comparing costs to CdG is a pointless exercise, the CdG design wasn’t for sale due to its propulsion and mis 2000’s prices for a new build CdG would be astronomic (otherwise the french would have ordered a 2nd ship rather than get bogged down in its own PA2 requirement !). Plus it would have to be a new build and Indian was already working on its own carrier project so couldn’t justify building another new carrier design overseas !
New Aviation Week article on the cost jitters of the JSF program on its customers.
HMS Protector just a Stop Gap for now
Update on the Protector news and it is going to be the Polarbjorn.

However they say its a 3 year lease and the future of Endurance is still under debate.
My thinking is that they couldn’t find a suitable long term solution off the shelf in terms of available Icebreakers with the size and capability they require so will settle for a short term solution whilst they have a rethink and see what money they have to play with. Given the 3 year lease they will either decide to put up and make do with Protector or bite the bullet and start the Endurance refit during this period as i rather doubt they could fund a new vessel to replace both.
Protector could have them scratching their heads a bit as the flight deck is as per Dilligence a platform above the accomodation block and they really want hanger & flight deck for their Lynx
I was refering to the new Carriers and airgroup in response to that press hack calling for their cancellation rather than the CVS & Harriers which have recently been canned.
However Harriers are operating from the Italian and USN VYOL ships and the USMC Harriers provided the heavy handed CSAR for yesterdays F-15E rescue.
No the Harriers wouldn’t do the same stand off strike as per the Tornado but it could do the same CAS that the Tornado’s are also trying to do at long distance.
Ironically Libya is a prime example where the Carriers would be in their element as the RAF struggle to find a viable friendly airbase to conduct operations from. Of course the the journalists won’t pick up on that fact 🙁
Regarding the Mistral, why does it, along with every other LHD in its class, only have a top speed of around 18-22 knots? And why do all of them except the LPX Dokdo have electric propulsion with azimuth thrusters?
Becuse they floating docks which requires them to be hold station for launch and recovery from the dock. They also need to be able to manoever in coastal waters at very low speeds to cope with wind & tide conditions for launch and recovery of craft and Helos.
Without self defense, CVF skippers had better plan to never go anywhere a salvo of C-802s would constitute a mission-killing ambush. Especially troubling are narrow straits where ships navigate in single file.
Err thats why the CVF have Phalanx CIWS, they just don’t have an area air defence missile system at present
Aye but surely the USAF IOC should have been able to move forward rather than back with the F-35A taking the development lead and F-35B being sent to the back of the class?.
AGREE!!!!!!!!! And putting the GTs above the waterline?!
What ?
They are there for a reason, they are not direct drive engines anymore but generate electricity so they don’t need to be buried in the bowels of the ship, located under the Islands means there is is less complex ducting that feed the air they need and exhaust their gasses with greatly impeding into the valuable hanger area. Also their location in the sponsons allows for an easy change of the engines without having to have access panels into the heart of the ship to gain access.
We learnt alot after designing and building the Invincibles and the CVF has been designed to avoid many of these pitfalls. Obviously some of members have no clue about the design process of the CVF. BTW hows your first GT powered avaiation vessel doing ?
Interesting, so still no clear idea which carrier will have Cats but it doesn’t sound like both (at least not under this government)
I suspect they are awaiting news on the EMALs trials as they have been on hold whilst the design is refined following feedback from the first live test last December. Those are not likley to be available to next year at which point they can decide on EMALs, EMCAT or even traditional Steam if the technology is deemed too risky or expensive to implement at this time.
No doubt both carriers will be built with the Catapult tracks and space for the arrestor gear. They wont fit a ski-jump and they certainly wont be doing a ‘Well Deck !!!’ as the lower lower block construction is well underway.
Plus of course Canada have already dismissed the Type 26/GCS idea already after the Brit Ambassador tried to plug it in the Canadian media.
The change from the earlier plan to provide the Marines solely with the STOVL JSF was made because of technical problems with the F-35B’s development, Amos explained.
“That that was the original plan,” he told the committee. “It’s yet to be seen if flying the 35B off carriers is possible.
“It seemed to be prudent that we buy 35Cs,” he added. “But the STOVL is still our primary purpose.”
But Amos reaffirmed his strong support for the aircraft’s development.
The F-35B is “vital to our ability to conduct combined arms operations in expeditionary environments,” he said in his prepared statement. “Continued funding and support from Congress for this program is of the utmost importance.”
I don’t know about you but that sounds to me that they have lowered their expectations for the F-35B and what it was supposed to do and it now looks like it will just do the CAS role with the ground forces whilst their C aircraft alongside the USN versions do all the other missions ?.
They don’t sound very confident over sea trials with the B at present do they, if they are then Italy should be seriously worried as they are quite commited to the type.
Anybody spot this on flight this week :-
Vice Admiral Venlet hinting at new partners joining the F-35 program possibly this year appears rather postive.
However in discussing the F-35B sea trials durings its probationary period gave me the impression that he has some doubts over the viability of the aircraft ?
Sounds like you were dumped by your ex doesn’t it ppp? You clearly have anti-Scottish views which are at best ill-advised, at worst bordering on offensive. I would suggest that your views on Scottish airfields are biased to such an extent as be worthless.
Well we don’t hear any bitching about Wittering or Cottesmore closing despite being in the same rural of England with a similar impact on job losses. So the actual thread is somewhat biased !:diablo:
Basically so as not to make it an election issue when there are more pressing concerns on the aggenda, couple that with working out which station offers the best solution for being re-developed or re-rolled.
BTW its a Con-Lib govt so more aimed at the Scottish Liberal voters rather than the rarer Scottish Tory voter !
