I don’t think very many if at all other than the land of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Nobody really needs an over priced two engine fighter.
The Greeks are losing interest and re-considering Rafale
The Swiss certainly don’t need them as the Gripen would make much more political and logistical sense
Turkey will stick to the JSF
this leaves the Saudis and Singaporeans.. but i have not seen any reports that stated that the RSAF preferred the Typhoon.

The AMX programme originated from a requirement of the Italian Air Force for single-seater and two-seater combat aircraft for surface attack missions. The AMX was originally conceived as a replacement for Italy’s aging fleet of G91 and F-104 attack fighters. The project began when the Aeronautica Militare Italiana (Italian Air Force) began drawing up specifications for a light tactical attack fighter to complement the larger Tornado IDS. The new aircraft needed to fulfill a variety of tasks ranging from attack and reconnaissance to long-range anti-shipping and air combat duties. Aeritalia began developing an aircraft to meet these needs, and Aermacchi also joined the effort. The cooperation between these two firms resulted in the new plane being designated the AMX for Aeritalia Macchi Experimental.

In the meantime, the Força Aérea Brasileira (Brazilian Air Force) had formulated a similar need for a light jet to replace the AT-26 Xavantes. In 1980, the Brazilian manufacturer EMBRAER also joined the AMX program. The AMX then became a joint venture of three firms to develop a light attack fighter for both Italy and Brazil. In 1982 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Italy and Brazil and the joint development and production programme was subsequently conducted by AMX Consortium, based in Rome, through the Italian companies Alenia Aerospazio, now Alenia Aeronautica, (46.5%) and Aermacchi (23.8%) and the Brazilian company Embraer (29.7%).

Although the AMX design that finally emerged emphasizes simplicity and low cost, performance has not been sacrificed. The AMX features a high-mounted swept wing with several high-lift devices. Coupling this wing with a powerful Rolls-Royce engine, license built in Italy, makes possible excellent short takeoff and landing capability. Both the wing and tail surfaces of the AMX have also been designed to operate at high angles of attack, and large control surfaces make for superb maneuverability. The main role of the AMX is ground attack in visual and marginal weather conditions, with primary roles in long range strike and air interdiction, close air support, reconnaissance and armed patrol. The aircraft is also highly effective in air defence missions and the lead-in fighter role. The AMX is capable of operating at high subsonic speed and low altitude, by day or night, and if necessary, from bases with poorly equipped or damaged runways.

The AMX designers also put great emphasis on upgradability, and a fuselage bay can be easily fitted with several types of reconnaissance palets or other mission-specific avionics. The AMX also makes use of rugged landing gear allowing operations from rough or damaged airfields. Although primarily an attack aircraft carrying bombs and air-to-surface missiles, the AMX is also armed with short-range Sidewinder missiles providing air defense capability. The AMX Advanced Trainer Attack (AMX-ATA) is a new AMX two-seater, multi-mission attack fighter for combat roles and advanced training. The AMX-ATA incorporates new sensors, a forward looking infrared, helmet-mounted display, a new multi-mode radar for anti-air and anti-ship capability, and new weapon systems including anti-ship missiles and medium-range missiles. The new AMX-ATA version is aimed at attack roles and advanced training, and is equipped with the most modern advanced technology man-machine interface and avionics systems. The integration of new sensors, a multimode radar to respond to a variety of new operational requirements, as well as the adoption of new weapon systems are some of the characteristics which make the AMX-ATA a potentially very competitive aircraft world-wide within the light combat/training aircraft market. It will be equipped with the new Eurojet EJ-200 Dry engine based on the same core as the reheated version developed for Eurofighter/Typhoon fighter.

In total, 192 aircraft, 155 single seater and 37 AMX-T two seater, have been delivered to Italy (110 AMX, 26 AMX-T) and Brazil (79 AMX, 15 AMX-T). The main difference between the AMX in two countries is the weapon and electronic system. The Venezuelan Air Force ordered eight AMX-ATA in 1999 for the advanced trainer and attack aircraft role. In December 2002, the Venezuelan Air Force signed a contract with Embraer for 12 AMX-T Advanced Training and Tactical Support Aircraft. Deliveries are to begin in 2005. In August 2004, the Brazilian Air Force signed a contract with Embraer for a mid-life update of 53 single-seat (designated A-1A) and two-seat (A-1B) aircraft. The upgrade will include three new multifunction colour displays, head-up display, night vision goggle compatibility and new communications / navigation suite. Elbit of Israel is to be the lead contractor.

    KNOWN COMBAT RECORD:
Bosnia – Operation Deliberate Force (Italy, 1995)
Kosovo – Operation Allied Force (Italy, 1999)
(Italian Air Force AMX fighters were deployed as part of the NATO forces in Operation Allied Force against Serbia in 1999. Source )

    Flug Revue and other info

The only usefulness of using the AMX is in Brazil’s domestic industries. As a combat aircraft it has very little going for it. All of it’s “combat experience” was done in an atmosphere where there were tons of support from US and French aircraft. Unfortunately Brazil does not have this luxury (although of course, Brazil is unlikely to fight the same type of enemies either).

It is a subsonic underpowered aircraft that is as expensive as an F-16. the R&D and production costs involved of building a naval variant would make it even more expensive.. structual modifications ain’t cheap. What you get is simply a “modern A-4”, when in today’s world you need something more.

classifications of Generation 2, 3 and 4 aircraft are becoming so blurred that aircraft from these generations can be capable of being “moved up” to the “next” generation via upgrades. It’s not as clear cut as generation 1 (early fighters) and generation 5 (stealth aircraft).

For example, the JA37D, with most of the Gripen’s features, (i.e data link, mfds, etc) is easily on par with some generation 4 aircraft

Brazil could get some A7’s and upgrade them. While still not a great fighter, it would be a more potent bomber/attacker than A4. Any reason why Brazil could/should not look into a carrier-capable version of their home-built AMX?

probably because the cost involved in navalizing the AMX might be too much for what little capability improvement it offers.

as for Rafale and little loads.. well that hasn’t stopped the Russians from choosing the Su-33 :diablo:

Folks, lets not go there. Instead, just stick with the topic of the thread. Thank you. πŸ™

my apologies to you wanshan, but yes I still think India should’ve went for this or China too (if they could)

One that I can recommend from limited personal experience (I grabbed a flying hour or three during a holiday) is Del Monte Flight School at Monterey airport about an hour South of San Francisco.

It’s an authorised Cessna flight school, which means nearly new aeroplanes. It’s friendly and has excellent instructors, many ex-US Navy. Great flying down the coast and Monterey’s a pretty cool place post-flight too!

The only downsides are, like most West Coast schools and unlike Florida, the school is FAA only, with no JAR or CAA approvals, which could be tricky if you’re wanting to log time for a British PPL. Also in July, watch ou for the notorious Bay Area fogs!

Don’t forget to check the latest homeland security rules on registering foreign pilots too.

    Happy landings!

thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately I am financially limited to Southern Cal. πŸ™

I’d excuse u for the above reply coz u did not understand a bit of what i was saying and the hear of Russia naturally had to be an irritation for any Norwegian, now that they are the frontline state for the US against Russia in the Norther side ….. and since u confessed to have understood very little to what i said from ur confession —– “I could make out of your feeble attempts to create anything near a semblence of the English language” —- I’d advise u to only reply to stuffs that u clearly undersyand, if not abstain from replying. Good Luck, Honey.

its okay I think many people here understand very little of what you are saying.. perhaps you could translate

feeble, undersyand, norther and coz the onlything that did make sense was the words that you copied from me πŸ˜€ but hey, if you’re unable to use a dictionary and learn off of my grammar then it makes me feel a bit tingly learning that I helped improve the spelling of a nationalistic kitty cat who avoids issues and resorts to name calling and fantasies πŸ™‚

i know that isnt on the topic, but there is an exaggerated optimism on UAVs such sistems are very, very wide open electronic-signal machines, the hackers dream.

I share your same views, it would be horrid if some country reversed all your UCAVs and used it against you. Its why i’m an advocate of large numbers of cheap light fighters ala FC-1 and LCA that can be expendable and mass produced. it would be better if they were single roled.

An X-15, scaled up three to four times in weight and size (X-15’s launch weight was about 20 metric tons), with (pulsed) (sc)ramjets on the wingtips would come close, although I think I would have preffered a more blended delta-like layout.

hehe i had a feeling you were thinking of the X-15 which is why I brought it up, due to the crazy propulsion and high mach that is vital for a point defense interceptor, although i’m not too crazy about its rocket propulsion. But hey if the Germans can do it why not the US.. all that’s missing is a really tiny propeller at the tip of the X-15’s radome.

No one gets too excited about the prospect of a party that uses common sense to take the best ideas from both.

Moderation it seems, is just not exciting enough.
    Imagine that. πŸ™‚

what do you consider as the “best” ideas from both?

Brazil’s govt cancels tender for 12 new fighter jets
Brazil’s government has canceled a tender for the acquisition of 12 new fighter jets worth $700 million, according to an official statement released Thursday by the Brazilian Air Force.

Is this the first time they stated this because I thought they’ve been saying this for the past year or so.

The jet feul is all spent in about a few minutes. Now you tell me any good to a plane like that! It’s not even a point defence fighter but a strap on to a rocket period.

thanks for pointing out the obvious sherlock πŸ™‚

i came from liaoning province, and there is little love for the japanese there amounst the vast majority of the people. and there is no reason why there should be any to start with.

what, you think the likes of sony and panasonic invested in china out of charity? they invested for the same reason as anyone else – because there is money, big money to be made in china.

to suggest that the chinese should somehow feel greatful for japanese investment is about the same as suggesting that you should feel greatful for being paid by your boss. japanese investment in china is business, plain and simple.

however, the economic aid japan has been giving china over the years is out of charity (or remorse for the war, or both), and there has not been enough reconisation of that on the chinese side, and you would have made a better point had you used that instead of investment.

You say you’re from Liaoning yet your handle suggests your British, but regardless most Liaoning people I’ve talked to are rather happy for Japanese investment into their province but I guess you’re not exactly working there are you  but of course what can I expect when most of the people here seem to have little love for the Japanese in general with people like Hello84 constantly whining about history. I guess its impossible to have a fair analysis of the economic situation in two countries when one side is obviously inclined to historical animosity and the other side simply doesnt exist on this board.
