In all, i think the only aircraft the Chinese actually reverse-engineered was the An-12 which was turned into the Y-8. The Tu-16/H-6 was an official license, and even though there was no license for the Il-28/H-5 the drawings and toolings were in the PRC, because Harbin had been a major overhaul center for the Beagle. Besides, there was a number of structural redesigns from the Il-28 to the H-5 so it definately was not a direct copy.

Those lists Flight publishes every year are nice for a general indication about what the inventory is, i have never ever seen one which is really accurate. I haven’t got the list from this year (and i’m not really interested either), but from what i read from Steve it’s no better this year.

The reason for this is very simple. There is absolutely NO way a magazine like FI is going to pay a correspondent/reporter all the hours of research needed to compile an ACCURATE listing. The money/page-filling ratio simply doesn’t allow for that. Let’s assume there are 200 countries, with an average of (say) 40 aircraft types each, that’s 200×40=8000 facts to be checked, plenty of which are very difficult (or worse…) to check.

Besides, if the list as Pak Thunder has posted is accurate, then this means the PAF does not have any Fantans? The FT-6es? The operational FT-5s? The stored F-6es? And what is a “C-130L” – if they mean L100, they should type that.

I guess the Dodge Charger in the Dukes of Hazzard counts as an airplane too…

In my memory, the plane crashing every episode of the A-Team was a Beech 18, but i might be wrong.
And why has anyone forgotten about Highwayman? It was absolutely awful, but one of the trucks of the highwaymen had a Gazelle inside.

And then there was ‘Call to Glory’ about a bunch of USAF pilots in the 1960s. Lots of Phantoms in there, and other stuff they could find in and around Edwards which already more or less existed in the timeframe the series should play.

But, like the Tornado, the Viggen is a multi-purpose AIRFRAME……no one version (whether it is the AJS JA or even the Sk trainer) is a multi-role fighter.

I don’t argue with that. But i don’t think you can argue with the fact that a Tornado IDS has a narrower role/task than an AJ(S)-37, and that a Tornado ADV has the same when compared to a JA-37. That being said, comparisons like this are totally useless as has been said before.
