I think Europe could better modify the PC-6. You only need a few changes to turn it into a strategic transport:
– Make it bigger
– Replace the one prop engine with four large turbofans.
– Get rid of the taildragger configuration
– Give it a ramp at the back, and a visor-type door on the nose.

Would have to dig for my source – it’s been a while since i read about batch 3 and centralising them all in 12FS.
There are only two F-15C/D squadrons in 3FW, by the way. Putting a third batch in yet another squadron would mean that a new wing (and hence a new base) would be getting AESAs. While i seem to recall that combining the AESAs in one squadron would help that.
The ‘secret’ runway for the former East German party cadre’s hideout at Wandlitz (to the NE of Berlin) was in a bend in the road. It’s now part of the B273 road, from Oranienburg to Bernau. The runway was ment to be used by small transports like the An-2, An-14 and L410. Unfortunately i don’t know of any flying from that stretch of concrete.

I think the initial setup was indeed two squadrons with half the fleet AESA-equipped, and the other half vanilla F-15Cs. But when a third batch of AESAs was delivered (9+9+9), the machines were appearantly concentrated in 12FS.

Because it works. It makes sure the pilots eyes have to do very little adjusting when switching from face-up (looking through the window) to face down (instruments). This greenish/blue somehow is pretty neutral from a brightness point of view, which means that in both dark and bright conditions the pilot doesn’t get retina cramps.

You’re proposing a totally new aircraft. No way that is going to happen, especially not since Airbus hopes to get the A400M flying before 2010 first.
…so the probable changes could be –
– High mounted wings
– Nose and the Front section being modified for managing cargos
– Rear fuselage section being modifed to have ramp
– Modified tail section
– Pilots would be promoted 😉 to the top
While those small details may look like ‘probable changes’ to you, they actually mean a totally new design. Please pass on whatever you’re smoking!
Not the serials, but…
The only operational unit to fly with the F-15C/APG-63(V2), is the 12FS with 27 machines allocated (the odd number being of course for it’s pretty unique machines) from the 3rd Wing. How to tell them apart from their non-AESA brethren from the 19FS (also 3Wg)? The fintip – 12FS has yellow, 19FS has got black fintips.

The Cope India pics i have seen all show black fintips – so no AESA.
Interesting – the current Commando Solo machines originally had the large ‘pizza cutter’ blade antenna under their wings replaced by those big pods. Now with the EC-130J, the pizza cutter is back together with the large pod!
