China builds the Z-9 (SA365N2 Dauphin) in an ASW variant, as well as the Z-8 (SA321G) as an anti-sub helo. I don’t know for the Z-8, but they have exported Z-9s before (Mauretania i believe) so there probably is an export license.

It was only fair that the X-35 was picked over the X-32. In the F-22/F-23 competition, they chose the ugly bird. For the JSF it was time to pic the pretty/ier one.

I like it. It gives an interesting insight into the psyche of the long-list signature maffia.

I think i’m going to use my signature as a means to keep my spotting record (should be some 8000 aircraft by now) alive, i’m sure you will all be interested. And also the number of times and the women i had sex with, cars i’ve driven, theatre seats i’ve had at the local cinema…

    Cool!

    #1 — the ABL YAL-1
1.1. What are “COIL”, “BILL” and “TILL”?

COIL: Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser. The actual shooting laser.
    BILL: the beam-sharpening laser.
TILL: the targeting/tracking laser. Don’t know the acronyms unfortunately.
1.2. Who builds the big mirror?
Brashear LP, they usually build large telescopes and such.
1.3. Who builds the turret assembly?
Lockheed Martin? I’m not sure if it’s for the full monty AL-1A, but the current YAL-1A should now have a LM-built ‘surrogate turret’.

#2 — What are the differences between the F-84F and the RF-84F?
Obviously, the RF-84F has two side intakes in the wing root, while the F-84F has a single nose intake. I don’t think that’s the full answer though, otherwise i don’t think it would have made it to this quiz ๐Ÿ™‚

#3 — What was the first carrier based jet photo reconnaissance aircraft?
I would guess the F2H-2P Banshee. It was the first true carrier recce bird, without armament, just cameras. It was delivered to the USN from 1950 to 1952.

#4 — What was the first manned supersonic photo reconnaissance aircraft?
RF-100A, first flown in september 1954. I don’t think any of the RF-86 variants were ever pushed past M1, and the MiG-19 recce versions came later.

#5 — When was the last operational Grumman F9F retired? Country, unit, date
Do you want Panthers (F9F to F9F-5) or Cougars (F9F-6 to F9F-8), or (if you’re really picky) the first Tigers (XF9F-9)?
For the Panthers, these are the Argentinian F9F-2 Panthers with 3 Escuadra Aeronaval, which were retired in 1969. The last Cougars were also Argentinian, two F9F-8Ts with the same unit which retired in 1971.

#6 — There was one USMC fighter unit outfitted with Lockheed single engine jets. Type, dates, unit and base
These were TO-2s, better known as the Navy/Marines variant of the T-33. The Marines unit was VMF-311 as an interim jet before the Panther became available. It was based at Yokosuka at the time.

#7 — The first British air combat mission of the Korean war. Date, aircraft, base, perhaps target
Those were Seafire F.47s from 800sqn, and Fireflyes of 827sqn aboard the HMS Triumph, on July 3rd, 1950. The target was the North Korean airbase Haeju.

#8 — Name the last biplane operational on a carrier. Type, unit, approx date of retirement
You mean operationally deployed on a carrier, or carrier-based biplanes without being actually flown from a deck? The Swordfish did survive with the RN until at least 1953, but it didn’t fly off any decks during the later years.

#9 — Name at least 10 aircraft that fly/flew with a disk on top (like the AWACS)
    E-1 (the Roof on the Stoof is a disc, even though it doesn’t rotate), E-2, E-3, A-50, 976, An-71, Adnan-1, EC-130AEW&C, P-3AEW&C, WV-2E (the Constellation).

#10 — Name at least 5 aircraft that fly/flew with two or more GE-J79 engines
    A whole symphony of J-79s? Ummm…. F-4, B-58, A-5, the F12F was to have two, and the X-21 (those vastly modified laminar-flow B-66s).

    #11 — A couple of code names
Sean covered this perfectly, i think.

#12 — What was the last USAFE Tactical Fighter Wing to leave their French homebase? Unit, type flown, date
The 366th TFW based at Chaumont (and deployments at Chamblay and Etain) which stayed in France until July 1962 with it’s F-84Fs. Recce and transport units stayed in France until the final kick-out, in 1966/1967. Which conveniently freed up some aircraft and units to send to Vietnam.

#13 — What was the last USAF unit to leave their French homebase and where did they go? (the activities of the 9th SRW at Le Tube don’t count, as Beale is the homebase, not Le Tube)
Don’t know which one was actually the last, but these were the remaining units by 1966:
25TRW, RB-66s, Chambley: deactivated (the bulk of aircraft and crew being sent to Vietnam).
    26TRW, RF-4C, Toul: to Ramstein / Zweibrรผcken.
66TRW, RB-66, Laon: to Upper Heyford.
513TCW, deployed C-130s, Evreux: to Mildenhall.

#14 — What was the first American military aircraft to make a scheduled landing in the People’s Republic of China?
Well, Kissinger went to China in July 1971 to pave the road for Nixon’s trip in 1972. I don’t know how Kissinger actually went to the PRC, so let’s just say Nixon’s Air Force One (either 26000 or 27000, both VC-137s) was the first, on February 21, 1972.

    #15 — What are THEEESE?
Il-102 and the Il-40 with the stretched intake ducts.

We were not allowed off the coach – but it drove slowly down the ‘secret’ ramp area and we took photos through the not-so-clean coach windows. In 2003 we were fore-armed and we actually got our coach driver to clean the windows before we arrived!

Among the gems photographed were the Il-102 (Su-25 rival) on the Ilyushin ramp and the P-42 being dismantled on the Sukhoi ramp.

In 2003 I noticed on one of my photos that I had taken a shot of the Su-27 with the large box-like fairing on the port nozzle for early TVC trials – it was just lying abandoned amongst a pile of airframes on the Sukhoi ramp.

Imagine a bunch of 15+ Russian aviation enthusiasts on a coach driving slowly down an area that we had not been allowed to even point our cameras at in previous years – indeed a couple of our guys had been arrested the previous year for doing just that!!

Well, you did a good job by recognising the TVC Flanker in that pile of rubble! It was one of the areas of the ramp ‘assigned to me’ back in 2001, and it was definately a really interesting piece of tarmac. Two early Su-27Ms (with a third one, 708, in one of the painting sheds just behind), a Su-27K prototype, the Su-28 prototype, the T8-15 with the RAM coating, all just being derelict. That area being such a mess did save me from an early trip to the security area: at one point i was suddeny looking straight in the eyes of some not-amused guy walking around there, but since there were quite a number of aircraft between us, he lost me before he could do anything ๐Ÿ™‚ Didn’t have such luck when at the Ilyushin ramp though…

But it’s good news that area is slowly opening up a little. I guess it was about time though: the telling off we got from FSB Colonel Pavlov wasn’t as much an angry one, as it was a tired and annoyed one. Would you happen to have those photos on-line somewhere? I’d love to see them, me being just armed with a pen and paper then.

Note for those who care: i’ve updated the plan of Zhukovskii above, with what you can find on the various aprons. LII of course is the Gromov Flight Research Institute.

There you have it, two guys on the internet trying to pinpoint an exact spot almost 2000km further to the East. Sometimes, i do understand why people find us spotters a bit funny ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, i was thinking the same about the taxiway to the Ilyushin-apron. It’s an apron i know pretty well, after all i had to wait in the shade of one of the bumped-up Il-86es for the Ochrana to arrive… It makes me wonder about the map i put up though – it’s definately not one from 2001, as i think then only the ‘central’ gate to MAKS was there. The whole area with the OKB aprons was closed off (well, so to speak of course) by the ‘human fence’.

I beg to differ about where those pics were taken, Ken. Behold one of my totally laughable pieces of drawing-on-a-pic below. With the cross i marked where i (and two accomplices of mine ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) saw the 1.44 back in August 2001. The pics you show however seem to have the ‘dump forest’ in the background which is to the SE of the short runway (aka as the static display line during MAKS). While there is some wood between the SE end of the main runway and the Moskwa river, i don’t think this is as dense as the one shown on the pic. I was in two external recons along the southside of Zhukovskii, in 1996 and in 2001, and although the foliage could have grown, i don’t think it would be enough.

I’ve put a question mark on where i think the pis were taken. Feel free to differ of course.

And thanks for the pics – good to see that at least something has happened with this bird…

It’s difficult with threads on politics and current affairs though. Pretty exhausting, writing The War Against Terrorism every time instead of it’s acronym.

Sorry, i can’t help you. Not even on http://www.aviacherteg.narod.ru/ which is usually MOST helpful here. They scan and zip almost every scale drawing published by the various Russian (and Ukrainian, and Belorussian) modeling/aviation magazines, but appearantly nothing yet was done on the F.1. If you want to plunder this site, be advised that it hasn’t been updated for a year or so, so i suggest you to hurry before it’s all gone. It has happened too often…

Also, a good (but time-consuming) way to find drawings is via http://www.simviation.com/designresources.htm which has a whole list of links with drawings. I had a quick look, but apart from a crappy scanned black F1C (REALLY bad) i didn’t find anything before i got distracted and started downloading Russian stuff i didn’t have yet ๐Ÿ˜€
