It wasn’t just the D/D+ model (the two variants with the long nose – the D+ had strip tape instrumentation and blade aerials vs. dials and whip aerials) which could carry the Sidewinder though. The A, C and E can/could too.

The D was the only one which toyed around with Hellfires on the testing grounds though.

Great looks, absolutely stunning STOL performance, very good view from the cockpit, pretty decent payload (which can include some paratroopers/cargo in the back of the pod) and most important of all: MAP programs!

The only thing i can make out of this, is that someone did an incredibly poor translating job.

The Russians did it too, and both the Chinese and Dutch did it with a sub.

Not by the US, but the sponsor countries had their cheques handed over almost 18 months ago. For them, it’s all spent money now so they want to see their promised revenue. At first, the Dutch were being kept out of the developing process as well (also on ‘security grounds’) initially, but later some companies did begin to participate. It’s interesting though that no Dutch companies are involded in the truely military aspects of the jet though: main Dutch involvement is with the turbine blades and the landing gear.

Personally, i think the Dutch expenditure on the F-35 is a waste. Those 800m US$ didn’t buy the country anything, except for some compensation orders – which are becoming less and less profitable anyway, because the US$ is getting so cheap. But the promises made on the F-35s unit price and the value of the compensation/participation orders all were calculated from a 2000+ production run. If anyone believes that many JSFs are going to be built, i have some nice real estate i want you to sell. And considering the fact that the Dutch will probably their eventual order anyway (i’d say 60, or three squadron’s worth), pumping 800m in a development is just a waste.

We should be buying domestic. Eurofighters!
