Oh yeah :diablo:
Fly her down to the falklands, positioned as a ‘gate guard’ but leave a note for any would-be enemy troops trying to take over – saying “P.S> this one’s live and still capable” 😮
Or a clear cover over the rapid start switch labelled. “In case of invasion break glass”
😀
Right at the very beginning when WL790 and WR963 were bought, one of them was supposed to go back to Scotland.. that would have been interesting.
Moving is still a last resort. We’re planning to stay but making preparations to go if we have to.
While I’ve nothing but respect for Avro Heritage I can’t say that I think taking WR963 there would be a great idea. I would be very wary until I see more progress with XM603. Even then, I think with the developments at Woodford – keeping a live aircraft there would prove difficult.
Definitely. Still a fair way to go in other areas though, but I can’t think of very many better places for the drawings to go.
A little update on the archive.
If everything works out, the archive for Type 696 and 716 Avro Shackleton aircraft (which includes all the original manufacturers drawings for MR1, MR2, MR3, T4 and AEW2; blueprint copies, the mod lists for all variants and various other bits of Shackleton paperwork) will be going ‘home’ to Woodford.

Rich
Pagen01;
There were serious plans made when a move to Newquay was on the cards last time, they weren’t rumours. WR963 was to have gone down St Mawgan with the intent that she would be the ground counterpart to WL790 when she returned from the USA.
TO23;
It is indeed in the book! Dedication to Duty is getting waved in the face of anyone that tells me it can’t be done (and there have been a few).
David Burke;
I couldn’t agree more. Time will tell how long we stay on site at Coventry, but I think the days are numbered.
I’ve just had a good e-mail regarding the archive. One of our team who’s been working on the issue has had a couple of offers for new storage come through tonight.
Not good Rich – how on Earth would you move the old girl, never mind where?
It would have to be by breaking her down and moving by road. We looked at the other option of shifting an aircraft but its way beyond us at the moment.
Cheers guys. It was a bit difficult to keep morale up this last weekend, but we’ll all bounce back.
We’re investigating several options for moving archive, store and aircraft if needs be – but I can’t say too much about it yet for fear of souring any negotiation.
If I’m honest, I’m trying not to think about it too much until I get some definite information as all the possibilities and variations are truly head bending. However, we haven’t (and won’t) give up on WR963 no matter how things turn out.
Hi all,
Sorry for the lack of updates.. as you can probably guess we’re quite preoccupied with sorting things out for when our friends at Airbase head south.
We have a complete drawing archive to move (some 16 large boxes in the hangar, several filing cabinets, plus a room full of blueprint copies and manuals), we also have the parts stored on site to put back into storage before long.
Last but not least – should it be decided in the coming weeks that the airport will not be able to accomodate us for any reason we might have a Shackleton to move. Not a groovy thought and something that we’re all a little worried about, but so far all answers we’ve had on the subject of staying have been a bit vague and non-committal. 🙁
More information will be posted on here and our facebook page as we get it.
Regards,
Rich
I’ve heard similar since posting that. It represented the situation and what we were being told at the time.
I don’t think the Varsity has got to Newquay yet. Pictures in the Duxford diary thread suggest it won’t be long though.
Glad to hear that WK163 is indoors again though.

Its only been closed 4 days. The move isn’t going to happen overnight!

Spot on. The major problem are the wing spars, and the small matter of the money required to do the job.
Regarding her future at Coventry, we’re still waiting to find out. We want to stay, but it depends if the owners of the airport are happy to let us once our friends depart for Cornwall.
