    Hi Merlin;

I’m trying to find out if anyone’s about tomorrow. I only tend to post up significant events or updates, and that has lapsed recently due to getting sent all around the country with work – my only input has been a little homework to both Shack and Meteor projects while trying to squeeze in family time too. The Facebook page tends to be the most up to date as there’s acess for a number of us to update it – however the opening times thingy needs looking at as its not every Saturday. I know for a fact the team are next in on the 17th to work on the issues that plagued them last weekend (battery issues). I can put an end to one rumour for you though – 963 isn’t short of fuel, she’s currently carrying around 600gallons. 🙂

    Regards

    Rich

Thats the rational approach! I’d just pick the one I wanted most! 🙂

The Spiteful prototype with the XIV fuselage would be the one for me… an awesome looking machine!

I don’t believe anyone is there this saturday coming, the team were in over the weekend sorting out some issues ready for an engine test, and subsequent bleeding and checking of the hydraulic system as both pumps have now been rebuilt and are being refitted. The date for the engine run is provisionally the 3rd June.

Canberra nose leg and Shackleton tail leg are identical, thankfully, and it saved our bacon when we had a massive crack develop on WR963’s unit. The only differnces were the mudguards fitted on the Canberra, and the gear door actuator mechanism is slightly different on the Shackleton.

I doubt anyone will go as far as x-ray or ultrasound; but a strip of paint and a visual check (and some dye penetrant if it looks suspiscious) is easily done. I know we’ll be looking at these areas on WS788 at Elvington tomorrow.

As has been said further up- its not just Meteors. Remember my fun with Shackleton tailwheel legs a few years ago?

Spot on John. The NF.14 AP lists the overall length as 49ft 11 3/4ins. I’ve seen the other dimension you mention reported in several places though, I wonder where the incorrect information came from?

Sorry Merlin most of the team were up attending my wedding. The next date everyone is in for sure is 20th May.

I’ll try and find out, but I’ve distracted most of the team that day by inviting them to my wedding! If I can’t get anyone on site, we’ll all be there getting stuck in on 20th May, when hopefully we’ll have at least one of the hydraulic pumps back.

    Hi Tony!

We’ve already had a couple off this chap to get us back up to a full set. Thanks for the heads up though!

Good to see you back on ’63, Rich. Progress on the old girl will now move on apace.

Did she like her birthday cake?

    Anon.

We’re pushing on, we’re pulling out all the stops trying to get her back serviceable in the shortest time possible, without cutting corners!

We’ve still a radio problem to sort out as something is triggering things to transmit as soon as power is applied to the PTR1751, a plan to implement to get more brake pressure, and a couple of hydraulic pressure gauges to plumb in to echo the MR3 and provide a genuine indication as to pressure rather than turning the windscreen wipers on to check its still there!!

Hopefully the coming weeks/months will also see a lot of moving towards getting ’63 back to true MR2 configuration, so if anyone out there fancies some redundant AN/APS20 kit drop me a PM!

The birthday cake was awesome, purely as its free cake…

    Regards,

    Rich

A few more bits from yesterdays efforts –

The main objective was getting to grips with the hydraulic problem – we’re going to cure it once and for all. One of the things that needs doing is the two Integral hydraulic pumps mounted behind No 3 and No 4 engine are going to get sent away for servicing. This meant they had to come off! While they’re out the way the self sealing couplings for ground servicing and the bracket to secure the pipes will be reinstated behind No 3 engine. There’s still more to do in that over the next few weeks all the filters will be coming out, and the hydraulic reservoir itself may be flushed depending on its state.

The stuck bomb bay selector has been removed, and a replacement found. The replacement had a serviceable valve body but a dead solenoid on the open side, so it was replaced with one of the good solenoids off the old unit to bring it back to fully working condition.

Normally seen leading a small team all beating a Meteor NF14 into submission at Yorkshire Air Museum, Blue_2 kindly came along to gave us a hand yesterday with something a bit bigger. Graham’s work was starting to prepare WR963’s nose panels to be removed as there’s more equipment to go in before long that we can’t get up through the aircraft’s fuselage.

And some cracking news – a fantastic acquisition arrived yesterday courtesy of a gentleman named Garry Hicks. These are two Sonics sets that the MR version of the Shackleton carried as part of its antisubmarine warfare role. As we managed to find an ASV21 radar scope a short time ago, and a plotting table not long after, we now have sufficient parts to restore WR963’s crew compartment back to full MR2 configuration. I never thought we’d manage to find one – let alone two of these!

As Blue has mentioned in one of his earlier posts, in between finishing off the intake rings I’ve been quietly getting on with trying to bring a bit of life back to the Gyro Gun Sight tray. Its a noticeable feature of the Meteors front cockpit and I don’t know of another aircraft with the system working, so I thought it was too good a challenge to ignore.

Well, after a lot of persuasion given to various moving parts it now works once again, and will be fitted back into WS788 once its been cleaned of excess oil and painted. Apologies for the video quality, but its the best I could do at short notice! Next up is the electric sliding canopy, and a few lights…

Are there any Vulcan manufacturers drawings left? I had heard a lot was lost – along with many Lancaster, York and other Avro drawings – in a fire some years ago.
