I must raise a few quibbles here, & add a couple of explanations. “Through-deck cruisers” were invented to bypass a political decision to scrap aircraft carriers. “Helicopter carrying anti-submarine cruisers” were so called to escape the provisions of the treat (I forget its name) on what was allowed free passage of the Bosporus & Dardanelles (you should know that! 🙂 ) – aircraft carriers weren’t allowed, on Russian insistence which they later came to find inconvenient. Both misnomers, as you’ve identified, both for political reasons.

But there aren’t any “landing platform docks” disguised under the name of “helicopter carrying destroyers”. I presume you mean the Japanese 16DDH. It has no dock, & no troop or cargo carrying facilities. I’d call it a helicopter carrier or helicopter-carrying cruiser, rather than a destroyer, but Japan has a long-standing tradition of downplaying names, & quoting light load displacements instead of full load, to justify them. Its role is to lead an ASW (or potentially anti-surface) flotilla, supporting its own helicopters & those of any small frigates in the flotilla, & acting as command ship. No amphibious role or capability.

Denmarks “patrol ships” are grossly misnamed, though. Full-up warfighting ships.

Technically the Helicopter carrying anti submarine cruiser designation did have some basis in reality as the Kievs were a bizaare hybrid of the two ideas, of course they were essentially aircraft carriers but they had more claim to their official designations than the Invincibles did.

I assume that you are reffering to the Absalons, they are certainly not patrol ships that is true, but they are neither frigates or destroyers either. I suppose you could go with something along the lines of ‘general purpose low intensity combat vessels’ if you wanted. They realy lead the way to the final complication with the system though, what do you call a ship that is that flexible? With some navys seriously considering the use of changable modules for different roles the situation gets ridiculous.

I think you have also missed it. I agree that the role these ships are intended for is one which has recently (though not always) been assigned to ships called corvettes, & that warship classifications are, to say the least, flexible, but I was talking about them being described as “corvette sized“. One can reasonably describe them as having a corvette role (though I’d prefer something like “arctic patrol ship”, or “large patrol ship”), but not a corvette size.

Define corvette sized? Surely a ship should be classified by its role rather than by its size so how big or small should a corvette be? I agree that ‘large patrol ship’ would probably be a better choice, but the whole thing raises once again the point that the old style classifications are next to useless now.

No problem, sealordlawrence. I will try to dig something up. If there is some shielding available, then we should see something. Let us wait until some good pics appear.

Idealy we want of those straight down the itake photos, but something tells me that the PLAAF will be unwilling to ‘leak’ any of those.;)

I don’t want to be rude, but your reply is completely irrelevant. Mackinaw isn’t a corvette, & she’s half the tonnage being discussed.

My point (& a very simple one) is that 6000 tons is not corvette-sized, unless inflation in warship classifications has suddenly risen to Zimbabwean levels. A few years ago, corvettes were in the high hundreds of tons. More recently, they’ve crept up towards 2000, into what used to be light frigate (& before that, destroyer) territory. Ships of 6000 tons are either frigates or destroyers at the moment, inflation having removed light cruisers from that size class long ago.

With all due respect your point is pretty irrelevent too. Most warship classifications now mean very little at all, as virtually all capabilitys have trickled down the scale.

Take the RN system for instance, AAD warships are refferred to as destroyers whilst non AAD vessels (ie type 23s) are frigates. The French and Italian Horizon class vessels, which the RN would call destroyers are more often than not called frigates.

The waters are becoming even more muddied, with vessels like the new Singapore vessels, described in some quarters as corvettes yet being the same size and having the same capabilitys as most frigates, if not some destroyers as well. Then there are the ANZAC’s, it is planned to fit them Standard SM-2 capability, so what are they?

Frankly I think corvette is a reasonable designation for these canadian vessels as it highlights the patrol rather than combat nature of their role and the limited combat capability they will have. Indeed ignoring the displacement the term corvette probably applies better to this class than it does to some others that use it.

I have seen definitions for the term ‘corvette’ which describe a vessel upto 100m in length, so the new canadian vessels just fit into it.

    Of particular interest:

    11th Plan Period — 2007-2012

So in the next five years DRDO plans to design and develop:

FCR for combat aircraft- a new project apart from the MMR?
Low Level Transportable radar– will replace the license produced units at BEL
Medium Power Radar — will replace the license produced Elta radars
3D Tac control and Short range radars– these are squarely directed at the Maitri LLQRM project.

These will round out the radar development path in India, making it practically self sufficient in radar systems.

DRDO has already covered the gamut of 2D and 3D battlefield surveillance, medium range 3D radars, naval surveillance 3D airborne radars, and 3D medium range fire control radars. Plus long range 3D AESA tracking radar for BMD.

The new fire control radar for combat aircraft could be an AESA for the LCA and potentially the MCA. It would explain the desperation to get AESA technology through the MMRCA programme.

I can confirm radar and cockpit upgrade, no idea about reduced RCS, however..

Thanks for breaking the star49 orientated insanity of this thread flex. I am paticuarl interested in the RCS issue as upto now we have heard very little on this issue withing Chinese military aerospace development. If the figures given for the J-11B are indeed true it would be a very good indication that the J-XX and/or future J-10 derivatives will have a very small RCS.

No, I read it. What I was wondering was how anyone could so grossly misunderstand it that they would think it anti-American.

Funny I was wondering how anybody could so grossly misunderstand it that they would think it anything other than anti-american.

if I’m violating any rules, please remove this, from the May 9th JDW issue

If all that is true it would be a very impressive achievement, especially the RCS reduction. I am sure that somebody here will be able to analyse the pictures we have of the J-11B to see if this is indeed the case?

With an AMRAAM body and a second stage it is probably too long to fit in the bay of the F22 anyway.

Thats what I was thinking, it would have to be an external load and that would have a significant impact on the stealth charachteristics of the Raptor.

Last time I checked the North Koreans had in excess of 20 Romeo class SSK’s, however that is a generic official number. I have seen a number of reports from foreign nationals who have visited the country who have talked of rusting submarines in harbours or even just grounded in bays. This would not surprise me given the age of the Romeos. I would suspect that the NK fleet is extroadinarily coastal.

The below thread is from CDF, I believe that you can only access it if you are a member but it is free and highly informative, if you are looking for pictures of NK warships these are the best that I have seen online.
