Fair point, but the Olympus was actually used operationally, by the Vulcan if i remember correctly..
hi mm2000 in the same video,Iraqi Falcon modrenized to carry Exocet missile and it used for long range in the gulf war against Iranian ships.
Looks like they just grafted the nose of a Mirage F1 on the front of it. Are you sure this isnt a radar and systems test bed that becouse of circumstances was used during the war.
Had the Hawker P1121 been built it would likely have been fitted with the Olympus and that was intended as a fighter.
Thats the sad thing, before 1991 Iraq had quite a number of very ingenious engineers which could work wonders with the right resources, its just a shame that they had such a murderous despotic thug for a leader and that he was replaced with an interim administration which made a catalogue of errors which can only be regarded as insane.
Wheather Merlin would be superior or inferior to Scorpene will not be a criticall issue , In littoral warfare and in noisy water as Jonesy has correctly put it the better trained crew will win.
Instead of spending another $ 1.5 Billion in a spanky new design perceived to be technologically better than Scorpene . I would rather think that they should build more subs of Agosta 90B class , Its really a nice sub , proven & robust design and if it is available in numbers , It could tie up significant assets of the opposing force.
Maybe, but it is apparent to all that India is pushing for a sea based Nuclear detterant in the form of submarine and surface ship based IRBM’s and LACM’s. Such vessels would have to lurk in the Indian Ocean and Arabian sea, the only way pakistan could attempt to counter this is with long range SSK’s operating far from shore, in such a scenario the better boat pakistan can get the better.
Huntinghawk, this has previously been mentioned in the UK publication Warships International Fleet Review, it seems as if the PN is very interested. This should be no more risky for the French than the Type-214 was for the Germans.
But Peru already has both types. I think he means it would be nice to upgrade them to a configuration with as much commonality as possible, instead of having zero commonality as at present.
Well if you realy wanted to down that route it would probably be best to talk to nicely to Israel, get the EL-2032 and Derby and Python-5. But dont be surprised if the development and procurement costs outway the limited commonality savings. Remember that you still have two different aircraft with different engines.
If Russia’s ABM-defeating tricks were worth a damn they wouldn’t have to worry either. What’s that tell you?[/QUOTE]
The US ABM programme in the form that it is being proposed for the next few decades, and i am sure SOC knows this wouldnt stand a chance against a Russian Nuclear strike with or without smart fancy Topol-M warheads. There will simply not be enough interceptors to take out the hundreds if not thousands of warheads that would be raining down on good ol US of A. The current ABM capability basically neutralises any threat of long range North Korean Ballistic missiles and possibly chinas arsenal if it does not improve dramatically in the near future (the chinese have shown little interest in anything more than simply retaining a modern Nuclear capability).
What the ABM system does offer is a system that starts the technological development process which may eventually allow for a true Stars Wars type missile shield, but any such system will likely not be seen in the life-time of anybody here if it ever does come into existance.
As for the Russians complaining, its becouse they can, they cant do anything else so they complain. If the US was in Russias position and a big country started building ABM equipment they would complain to. Hell they have a go at chinas military spending when the US spends over 40% of the total world defence budget.
The RC-400 is intended for aircraft such as the Mirage F1/3/5/50, it is actually meant as a radar for small nosed aircraft. The cost of installing a foreign radar with all the wiring that would go with it would probably prove prohibitive. Also remember that although the EL2052 is undergoing flight tests it is still not ready for export.
Capability improvement is debatable, frankly it would be better to go for the Phazotron Zhuk-MFE which was recently undergoing flight tests on a Mig-29-these were partly funded by Mig. Or wait 18 months and see what comes of the Zhuk-A Aesa radar that Phazotron claims will be ready for flight tests at the end of this year or next.
If you want french weapons buy the Rafale, and if you want Israeli ask the American nicely for some second hand F-16A’s send them to Israel and give them the ACE upgrade, then in a few years time you can further upgrade them by replacing the 2032 antennae with the 2052 one.
As for a western radar firing Russian BVR’s, to the best of my knowledge it has never been done and if you have got an Israeli radar just use the Derby.
why are they going for a new design after only three Agosta90B last one made in karachi ? perhaps the A90B didnt meet their expectations, hence the churn.
Probably becouse the French have somewhat cleverly managed to design a sub that is better than the Scorpene that India is in the process of aquiring.
In fact the french have been very clever, exploiting the situation between two near third world countrys to sell 12 new submarines in a decade.
Pakistan gets Agosta’s so India gets Scorpenes so Pakistan gets Marlin, its whats called an arms race.
I agree Petros, though the Hawk has only a basic air-to-ground capability (bombs and rockets mostly, though the Maverick has been mentioned a few times), whereas the T/A-50 is really a lightweight fighter, and can carry a full (APG-67) radar, and BVR missiles giving good air-to-air capability, and has a robust air-to-ground capability. The M346 looks promising, and the weapons options seem quite good, including light anti ship missiles, though fitting of a radar would be troublesome.
As I understand it, and i hope somebody will correct me if i am wrong, the T-50 dosnt have the radar and BVR capability. That is reserved for the single seat F-50???
Actually the Yak won the Russian competition and the L-15 although heavily influenced by the Yak (there was technical assistance) it has substantial differences, just look at the tail end and the engine exhaust configuration.
One of the reasons the Hawk won over the Yak in the last Indian contest was availability, at that time the Yak was not even in production.
Infinite: I think you are probably thinking of the original Mig offer, which was the Mig-29M, which was pulled in favor of the Mig-35, which is just a renamed Mig-29OVT. Though they seem to change names every few years anyway…
Not Quite the case. The Mig-29OVT is realy just a demonstration model for the new engines and flight control system. The Mig-35 has an increased airframe life (6000 hours if i remember correctly) and a number of other airframe improvements possibly including reduced RCS. The Russian are also pushing heavily to get an AESA radar of Russian origin in it (The Zhuk-A appears to be the favoured design).
All the Mig-29 designations are actually very pravtical and realted to specific upgrades or design changes. The Mig-29M/M2 was a substantial upgrade of the basic fulcrum series, as i understand it it is impossible to upgrade a Mig-29A to M standard hence the SMT designations. The Mig-35 is a design improvement over the M model.
I would be interested to know whether the Mig offer includes two seaters such as the Mig-29M2 or or a UBT version or just single seaters.
The interesting bit is the Mk-41 compatibility. Is this missile intended to compete with the SM-2 series missiles, if so will it have any ABM capability?
