The Iranians are providing support for the insurgents in Iraq, to what extent it is not clear but certainly knowhow, explosives and finance have been forthcoming.

If I remember correctly the Trigat-LR is to be used by the spanish tigers when they get them but as yet not for the french or german ones. The Australians use Hellfire.

I think with the funding issues the US currently has this is unlikely to happen.

It would be interesting to know how much the original Aegis/VLS programmes cost in comparison to the DDX programme as well.

These arecertainly going to be the most advanced and capable destroyers in the world, probably a generation ahead of the rest of the world, but at that price you have to wonder whether its worth it. I just hope the USN can adapt the desihn to form the basis of everything the USN will need in the future.

The website below is in Russian but if you put it through babelfish it is a very good source about the Project 667M Yankee sidecar conversion.

The Yankee class SSBN K-420 was reconstructed in the mid 1980s to carry 12 of the supersonic SS-N-24 cruise missiles. The reconstruction required a significant extension to the hull. I did once have a picture of what was claimed to be it, but I have since lost it. If anybody could provide a picture of the K-420 fllowing the rebuild I would be extremely greatfull if you could post it here or email it?

erm, Edz, you are aware that putin has been elected by the Russian people twice-admittedly in rather dubious elections but still he was elected and Russia is sustaining over 5% economic growth per annum.

danrh is right, the only reason the Kuznetzov or Varyag would require less remodelling is becouse the near vertical under-deck launching of of the SS-N-19 shipwrecks as opposed to the deck mounted canisters on the kiev class allowed for a bow mounted ski-jump. everything danrh said was correct.
There is some thought that the Mig-29k and Su-33 were brought about largely becouse of the intention to build the 70,000ton + Ulyanovsk which was effectively just an enlargement of the original concept (it would have had the same missile and gun armament only on a larger hull allowing for greater aircraft carrying capacity)

Probably isnt any good? As long as she was kept in a resonable state during her prolonged wait the hull should be good. And the vessel when complete should be roughly equivilant to the British T23s.

The mroe I think about this the less likely it seems thast the PLAN will put this boat into service. There is no evidence other than conjecture and a few models that there may be any chinese carrier aircraft, no rumours of an Su-33 purchase, nothing. TheVaryag in her current state shows no sighns of any of the systems that would be required for her to go operational.

Look at this ship at the moment, there are no sighns of any weapons, communication systms, radars, or deck handling systems. Its unlikely its even got engines. If the PLAN are going to put her into service they are at last a year or 2 away.

As far as I know no country has contracted the Enforcer 30000LHD but it may be worth adding it to your excellent website as a point of interest.

Sky Watch, is Mars Passet. That was the system that was meant to be intalled on Kuznetzov. The Tombstone mounted on Peter the Great (Kirov class) is installed as a single rotating mount. So I doubt that was intended to be fitted, it is also associated with the S-300FM system which was never intended for installation on a carrier.

Actually I dont think she was, her sister Kuznetsov ws desighned and built with the intention of carrying the Mars-passet system, but this apparently failed and so the super-structure of Varyag was changed so that she didnt carry it. I cant think of any other fixed radar naval panels in the Russian inventory that would go there?
