There are two new missiles in the S-400 system, If you google you will probably find the designations. The quadpacked missile has a range of 120km and the big one has a range of 400km. The 18 years of development they have had have included economic and political turmoil on a massive scale and slashed defence budgets the fact that the Russians even managed to keep developmant going is in itself impressive.
The system is deighned to be a development of the S-300 system, elements of the S-400 can be gradually intergrated into the existing S-300 system. The S-400 has even been given the NATO designation SA-X-20. Below is a link related to the S-400 system.

Antey-Almaz has said that it is working on a system (S-500?) called Samozherts (or something along those lines) that will include elements from both the S-400 system and the S-300VM (Antey 2500).

As I said funding combined with unwillingness to export the technology. I would like to see you develop an entire advanced long range air defence system.
I may be wrong but I believe that the S-400 system was offeredt India at one point.
Its existance is an excepted fact.

The S-400 does exist, full size mock-ups of the missiles have been shown in public and I have seen a picture of what appears to be an S-300 launch vehicle with 1 of the launch tubes replaced by 4 smaller ones (unfortunately I cant find it anymore) The reason for the delay appears to have been lack of funding, Russia has apparently been unwilling to allow such advanced technology to be exported thus foreighn funding has not been used.

It was not me who was comparing them to the 052C.

Herakles can be combined with a large 3d surveilance radar (SMART-L, S1850 etc) in the same way that Sampson, Arabel and APAR can, you would know this if you read the PDF I posted.
India could have gone down the Aster route but didnt becouse they cannot afford it. They could have had the Arabel system (As on the Sawari 2s and the new franco-italian DDG’s) They could have had Herakles (as on the Fromidable class and the upcoming FREMM frigates) or even Sampson (T45) but these options were too expensive for India so it went for the much inferior top-plate/Stil combination with far less advanced RCS technology built into the vessels. India is even having to wait to get a VLS version of the Stil.

Just found the below about the TVC RD33, apparently it is designated as the RD133 and can be fitted to the Mig29/k/ubt/smt.

I dont think you could fit SPY-1F on this ship. The Nansen class is over 5000t, thats 2000t heavier than the Formidable class.
I realy cannot see how you can call Herakles the weak point-its simply not.

A PDF from Thales about Herakles

    http://www.thales-naval.com/naval/pdf/herakles1.pdf

The reason India hasnt bought it is that they cannot afford it with Astor so instead India is left with the top-plate and Stil combination, for which it is being forced to wait for the VLS version.

It is indeed possible to fit 4 smaller missiles in the S-300 size container, I forget the designations at the moment but I am sure someone here has them.

i wasnt talking about the hovering part of the article, Just George Js comment that a Mig29MKI or whatever would be a completely different aircraft to the S.

It dosnt look like a fighter nose? Maybe maritime surveilance?
The closest thing I can find that has a resenblence is the radar housing on the nose of the SH-5 flying boat?

Jaguar for deep penetration? I would use it for close air support at best.

According to the below link Russia is going to offer the TVC RD-33 to India, I do not know how reliable the source is but read it for yourselves and make up your own minds, but there are a number of coincidences. Despite having been on the drawing board for several years this engine/aircraft combo only flew in the last few days (after the request for proposals for the Indian MRCA programme) and it will be displayed at this years MAKS, a major advertising occasion for the Russian arms Industry.

    http://alert5.com/2005/08/jetmaker-mig-displays-latest-maverick.html

If Russia offers both Bars 29 and TCV RD-33 I realy feel that India should take the mig 29 route, it would allow for common avionics/radar/weapons upgrades and intergrations with the Su-30MKI fleet, and it would make for a phenominal aircraft (with 2 engines, supposedly an IAF preference) at a good price, and it looks realy cool. :diablo:

Just found the same story, only with a little more detail, from the moscow times so it looks more promising.
