I dont think there have been any outpourings of hate and bile here, only justified criticism. As far as I am concerned Islam, Chritianity, Communism, Facism, Nazism etc are all the same, that is ideologies open to criticism, and lots of it.

Lets look at all this in context, a Christian Archbishop mentioning having some aspects of Shariah law for muslims to deal with marriage settlements, children and finance ect. Go onto the BBC Have your say website and have a look at the reaction asking people to go to islamic countries if they have a problem. What I find wrong about that is muslims arnt asking for Shariah within the UK now I hate to imagine had the head of muslim council of GB had said something like that which im glad he didnt. look at some of the responses in this thread alone:

i mean where has adding whole of shariah law been mentioned? for gods sake a christian head of church is talking about a few family laws which are already in practise but not recognised within the UK system. So allot of people are blowing this out of context. Islamaphobia is on the rise in the UK, people get scared and jump the gun, more racial and religious motivated attacks have increased against minority groups and things like this will only increase community tensions.

It was being looked at in context to start with. No civilised haman being with a basic respect for human rights wants Shariah law and that is the issue here.

Does it make, for instance, US Law right? Does the sentence “one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” ring any bells? one Nation under God, but which God? Whose? And Justice and Liberty for all? That’s contestable on a couple of levels at least.

Just because you perceive one law as being wrong does not necessarily mean that your alternative is right.

600 years after the Crusades, America, a Christian Nation led by a President who believes he interacts directly with God, still incarcerates people without trial and without evidence. Surely that goes against all the laws of a society which espouses the concepts of equality, liberty and justice?

Some, perhaps many, aspects of Sharia Law are reprehensible to those brought up in Christian Societies. What people need to realise is that irrespective of the existence or otherwise of a Divine Deity, organised Religion has grown as a result of someone, somewhere, realising that the power engendered by the concept of Deity, gives an opportunity to exert influence over others for their own personal gain. The Archbishop of Canterbury doesn’t live in a two up two down terrace in inner city Handsworth or Soho, the Pope doesn’t live in a simple home in the mountains of Italy and Muslim leaders do not live in brick hovels in the wilds of Iran and Iraq.

I dont quite know what your problem is but what happens in the US does not justify the savage nature of Shariah Law either. I find it utterly reprehensible that the US is as religious as it is but it is in no way as barbaric as Islam.

Any ideology that advocates flogging a woman for being raped can only be regarded as vile.

I see sealord is back to hes usual islam bashing. Just to clarify the archbishop has mentioned about using some Shariah law in courts not any muslim body so before everyone go’s out and starts to lynch muslims do read that part again.

On a more serious note, religious courts do exist in the UK and have such as the jewish beth din. If hes refering to something like this well it kind of allready exists. I dont support implementing any shariah within UK law, this country is majority non-muslim so it makes no sence as i think it may isolate minority groups more. Hes speech seems more politically motivated, maybe hes trying to draw more masses to the church. Might actually work.

The introduction of Islamic law into UK law is even more worrying than the establishment of a parallel system. Fortunately the overwhelming response to this seems to have quite rightly been absolute disgust.
