I heard it was doing a formation flyby with the Halifax. Shame the Valiants have got the boot though… 😀
I respect them also, having read his postings. I was just thinking out loud that with the benefit of hindsight it’s a shame they weren’t preserved, like so many ‘last survivors’ of larger types, ie. B.1 Vulcan etc.
There was no pop at NAM for not taking the Strathallan one on 🙂
I meant the ones Mo alluded to in his post in particular T-O, Nashio…
I’ll be stuck with the Bloody Tourists every weekend till about October now 😡

I think of the hours on the front settee in the nose, with the most magnificent view in the world.
I’ve only ever seen the view out of a Mk1 nose section, it must’ve been a truly awesome experience.
The Shack 1’s sadly just (yet) another story of mismanagement in the UK aircraft preservation world.
nice work martin. Specially looking at what you started with…
You make some good arguements Mark. I’ve been giving this lots of thought (how sad am I:o).
Firstly I’d never question the right of the owner to do what he likes with an aircraft, indeed I’ve argued on other threads it’s his call so he can do what he wants to do-he’s the one stumping up the cash so the rest of us can see it. As to the Shack question, I’d rather continue to discuss the historical validity of such a project rather than the rights of it’s owner if that’s ok, seeing as it’s only hypothetical.
745 and 963 both started out and served this country as MR.2’s so it’s perfectly valid to return them to this spec. Specially so in 745’s case given the type’s link to the location it’s preserved in. It’s not making them into something they never were. Making a 1 from a 2 would be a step too far in my ‘umble opinion.
However…
If converting one of the Pathos Shacks was the only way it was going to reach preservation then fair enough. Better that than they continue to fester or get the chop. Though like you i fear that’s their fate 🙁
So there you go Mark, you’ve sort-of budged me! 🙂
…they’d still look better preserved as MR.2’s though…;)
not an entirely unfair assessment Daz… 😉

hoping to be at elvington depending on work.
But I am biased, purely because to me the MR.2 is the nicest looking of the lot! 🙂
Well you may as well just make a fibreglass replica MR.1 and bolt a genuine nose to it then. At least that way the majority of shack parts fitted would be genuine MR 1 and could claim pedigree. I know its a hypothetical question, I understand your question and my answer would be sorry but no, the end product mongrel wouldn’t be worth butchering a 2 for. I’m not entirely sure the comparison with the YAM Halifax and 474’s entirely fair- they’re both tributes to crews killed in their hundreds in these aircraft, recognition which in the case of the halifax was definately overdue.
Y’know, I had a curious feeling it’d be about that price! 😀
I had to chortle when one tried to get into a car park in Hull (parking for his lunch I guess) and forgot about the height barrier… 😀
