Last CofA expired July ’98, so either :

1 It wasn’t this one (possibly the Breighton one?), or

2 It was considerably more than 3 years ago!

It probably was considerably longer then 3 years ago , I must be aging faster than I should be !! . I think it was a certain Mr Pollock who last displayed her – there is no longer a reply to mail from Strathallan House , maybe worth asking elsewhere what the plans are for her ???

    Hi Dave

The Kermit Weeks A/C is one of the Ex Ansett Airlines machines that went to Antilles airways thence to Ryanair and thence to Kermit. So I can’t remember it’s history with the Kiwis but I will find out and Post.

The other Ansett machine is on display at Southampton UK.

I can’t remember the history of the other UK Sunderlands you mention but I don’t know if they were RNZAF or not – I think not. I am sure a sooth sayer on this site will beat me to a post but I will look it up.

    Kindest regards
    John P

The Kermit Weeks machine never actually made it to Ryanair , Sir Edward Hulton rescued her and she was based at Calshot Water . There was a deal which would have seen her based just outside Dublin operating tourist flights around Ireland , she got as far as Dublin and even sported the Ryanair name , but she never operated any flights for Ryanair and was flown back to the UK , then sadly further on to Mr Weeks .

Personally I would not accept any ones charity, I am 65 done my bit but am quite capable of paying my way, even if it has to come out of the heating allowance given to us old ‘uns by Chancellor Brown.

It does seem odd though that a free shuttle bus service to/fro Cambridge is free from DX, I would have thought a charge would have been made for this.

John , I hope nobody would regard this as charity , I would consider it an honour to help any Veterans attend any commemoration of their service . We owe them a large debt to them and to the others who made the ultimate sacrifice – and not just in WWII .

I have managed to have a sneeky peek at AA while locked away in her hangar , looks like she was carefully dismantled with an oxy-acetylene burning kit , should be interesting to find out how they glue the wings and fin back on 🙁 .
Steve , I have been looking back through some of the EF photos and I can’t see the Beau in any of them , I can see some small parts – does anybody recall seeing the fuselage sections ??.

It is, on the face of it, quite a generous gesture. But it is simply a small part of the debt we all owe.

Forget, the Aces, the V.C.’s, men with more ribbon than chest space to display it. And think about what the debt actually is. From the greatest ace to the humblest erks we owe them. And what we do owe them is the opportunity to live the lives we lead today. We owe them our lives pure and simple. Now, if we have the gall to believe that our lives are not worth a donation of £8, what is it all about? Europe, North Africa, the Far East, all the seas and oceans, even our own fields hold our dead. The War Memorials that our drunken and callow youth choose to defile by using them as a toilet name those who made the supreme sacrifice. If we’re now struggling to Honour the dead, for God’s sake let’s do what we can for those who are still with us.

Andy in Beds is right. Free entry to the over 70’s, let’s all pay a bit of the debt while some of them can appreciate the gesture.

    Regards,

    kev35

An excellent eloquent post , good to see you back Kev.

No matter what they put on surely it should be free to the people we are commemorating , do we pay our debt to them with a free marquee , a few sannies and a program ??? – surely we owe them much more than that , these heroes are few and fewer between every year – but the sad fact is that fewer will visit by being insulted to be asked to pay an admission fee .
We are in their debt – lets prove it by treating them in a befitting manner. 😡
