Back to Cosford. I can’t see how they could do it simply on the grounds of access. The Vulcan and Victor are positioned behind the top hangars ready to move directly into their new home. To bring them down onto the airfield would be a mammoth undertaking and would possibly mean the construction of a new roadway to facilitate their movement. I would imagine there is not enough room to attemmpt to locate the three V Bombers near the Conservation centre and it is dark behind there anyway.

I don’t need to discuss it. Frank and crazymainer are doing quite well on their own.

As to the topic, I do not see that the excuse that the Government is multi-layered is a valid one. The whole point being that the response needed should have been an immediate response. This was not the case. Also, the fact that the levees did not burst until after the worst of the storm had passed is still not valid as an excuse. The response to either the storm or the flood was, as previously stated, far too little and far too late.

As stated before, help should be accepted from whatever source. It is easy for Mr. Rohr to say from the safety of Maine that no help is required. He is not on the ground in New Orleans and he cannot dispute the situation in New Orleans is desperate. There is still a breakdown in Law and Order, bodies are floating in the streets and rotting in buildings and there are hundreds of thousands of displaced persons.

If it was just a matter of throwing dollars (estimated to be a minimum of 10.5 Bn Dollars) at the problem, how then can the Federal Government justify the failure to invest 25 million dollars towards ensuring the security of the levees? A case of penny rich and dollar poor? Not to mention the death toll.

It is a tragedy of the highest magnitude, my heart goes out to all affected, but there has to be an accounting.

It will be interesting to see who the Administration blame.

    Civilised, eh Frank?:)

Apparently, the fabled Mr. rohr has been unable to keep his mouth closed and brain engaged and thus resorted to the usual response of those with little intellect, the personal attack.

I did not see your latest petulant outburst, but then again I don’t need to. It would be the usuals verbose angst you normally trip out on these occasions.

IU was most heartened to see the progress made by rescuers and that the situation is gradually coming back under some sort of control. Perhaps the physical damage to some parts of New Orleans is not as bad as first feared.

I do find it odd that the leader of the Government can put himself in charge of an investigation into whether or not HIS Government failed in their duty to the people of those states affected by Hurricane Katrina. It’s like a sinister version of poacher turned gamekeeper.

Over to you Mr. Rohr. I await with amusement your next missive.

    Dear Mr. Rohr.

To echo Ashley’s sentiments, what an ungrateful wretch you are. The people needing the help wouldn’t turn it away but you are very safe where you are, and, undoubtedly, a dollar in a jar eases your conscience over the way you have reacted.

This is the biggest failure ever by a first world country to respond to a disaster on their own soil. Yes, it is overwhelmingly easy for a Country like America to mobilise help when it chooses to. I expect there was some misunderstanding between what was required in terms of immediate help and what the Government thought/was told were required. Either way, the people in the states affected were let down terribly by those they elected to protect them.

    And to all of us.

This is not a thread asking who made the most contribution or who was brave / braver / bravest. It’s a light-hearted, ‘stick up for your favourite allied fighter pilot’ thread.

You trying for a place on the next series of Grumpy Old Men? I think Mike J has already bagged that :p

    Moggy 🙂

How dare you? I am far grumpier than Mike J!

If it’s just stick up for you favourite fighter pilot I’ll go for Brian Lane, 19 Squadron and the anonymous Spitfire pilot who shot nothing down and didn’t get shot down himself. Accordingly, he called his war a “no score draw.”

    Moggy.

Choose to denigrate who you wish. I think it was more than just a few barges and yes, I think the crews of Bomber Command did have an influence on the decisions made by Germany during the Battle of Britain. Who would I choose? None of them or all of them. Not really saying that anyone person is more deserving of recognition than any other in this case.

ATA and combat? They didn’t fly around with a big flag saying ‘please don’t shoot at me I’m only a ferry pilot.’ It was eminently possible that an ATA pilot could have been intercepted at any time. If that isn’t likely to lead to an attempt to escape, which I would call combat, well, just my opinion.

Not as sage as many but just as deeply held.

Pedantic mode now retired on a permanent basis.

I’ll leave you all to discuss whether Boyington was better than Buerling was better than Nicholson and on and on……..

To me they are all deserving of recognition.

    Moggy. (Pedantic mode on.)

‘One Allied pilot to fly combat during the Battle of Britain.’

Any of the RAF’s Bomber pilots spending every night attacking the invasion ports, the German oil industry, bombing forests and troop and transport concentrations on the way to the invasion ports.

Or any ATA pilot delivering Spitfires and Hurricanes to Operational Squadrons thereby relieving the RAF of the task and allowing those RAF pilots previously detailed to ferrying to go on operations.

No-one specified it HAD to be Fighter Command….

    RPSmith.

I think the family’s wishes are of considerable importance when a decision is made. Otherwise the burial site could be local to the airfield they operated from or local to where they died.

I was researching a crew and one of the casualties was a Londoner based at Upper Heyford. He failed to get out of a Wellington which hit the Birmingham Balloon Barrage and crashed. As he had no next of kin he was buried in Witton Cemetery in Birmingham. Anyone familiar with the M6 between Junctions 7 & 6 Southbound will know the Cemetery I mean. It is located on a hill to the left of the motorway. Other casualties remains from the same crew were buried where they originated from.

Photographys always been rather difficult, but i imagine it will get a lot better when the building work is completed.

    Tell me how, please….

I’m going to need one hell of a lens to photograph the B-24 for a start! Aircraft hanging from the ceiling and at least one mounted vertically on a wall?

Question is, will it remain a Museum or are the airframes just set dressing for the Architect to show off his new building?

I believe the concept is to demonstrate a world divided by the Cold War. The twisted lump of metal being built will be more reminiscent of a Hangar damaged had the Cold War gone hot. I’m not intelligent enough to argue the merits of the building on anything other than an aesthetic viewpoint. So far, my worst fears have been well founded. It looks odd, out of place, impractical and an eyesore.

I have a feeling I’ll spend more time at MAM in future rather than Cosford. I asked four of the staff whether they thought the new building was appropriate. Three sets of raised eyebrows and a chap who walked away laughing.

    Auster Fan.

No particular squeezing, it has always been that jumbled.
