Airlines, as a seasoned traveller you should know this, have rules about how many people they can carry with mobility problems due to the problems which would ensue in the event of emergency evacuation. Wheelchairs don’t go down the slides very well do they? Your suggestion that Aer Lingus should send an A330 each week is ludicrous. Don’t you think that if it was probable they would have done it anyway? Conversely they can fill aircraft to BHX for the Cheltenham Festival.

Pau is half hour by bus and has a scheduled daily Ryanair flight. Exactly how far is Tarbes from Lourdes? I was quoted 21 Euros from Lourdes to Pau by taxi. About 14 quid?

T5 if you can afford to go to Thailand as often as you do for a month at a time you can afford a fiver for a sandwich.

It might have something to do with the fact that Pilgrimages to Lourdes are rarely solitary affairs. People tend to go in large groups and thus there are literally thousands of coaches from all around Europe in the town. It’s really not the sort of place to fly in and out of in a hurry. You need to spend some time there. Also, many of the visitors are suffering from illnesses and varying degrees of disability so coaches are a better option.

For someone without problems, a flight might be the ideal way but most visitors use Lourdes as a stopping point on a larger more widespread holiday.

PAU, served by Ryanair, is only about half an hour away by bus or taxi. PAU is a nice airport but very quiet. As for Lourdes? Well, it’s one of the most emotionally evocative places I have ever visited and will definitely go again. The town itself is basically Blackpool but selling Religion instead of rock.

I drove to the Pyrennees with some friends and we visited Lourdes on the Friday in the pouring rain. It was an incredible experience. The next day I flew back from Pau to Stansted and had a great flight for about £29 inc. That night my friend rang me about 9pm and whispered ‘Listen!’ She held her mobile and I listened to ten minutes of the most beautiful choral singing from one of the services. Whatever Faith you are, or, even, if you have none, this place is worth visiting.

If someone asks me why, I try to explain, in my own clumsy and often faltering way, (those who know me will know what I mean), that it is about debt. A tangible debt which colours our lives and gives some people the freedom to consider me an anorak. If the little knowledge I have shows people that I care deeply and passionately about the people who paid that debt, then I am proud to be an anorak.

This last couple of years I’ve been priveleged to make friendships that I haven’t secured in any other walk of life. I’ve crawled the length of a Lancaster, seen ten Spitfires, in the air! All at once!! I’ve met veterans, and slowly, the realisation dawns that I can speak to them. Not only that I can, but that I should, at the very least say thank you. So now I do. And that thanks is often repaid a thousand fold by some anecdote from a tortured past, maybe a smile or a laugh, or the simple words you’re welcome.

And now it will always be there. So I try to record the stories if I can. Some people might suggest it’s living vicariously, maybe so, but to share their world, even if only for a minute or two, is an honour and a privelege. Ask Snapper what Johnny and Babe mean to him, he can explain it far better than I.
