I would never suggest that you would support the actions of the SS at Oradour. My point was that your disapproval of the death penalty seems to lie at odds with the history of your country’s recent past. Especially that you have now told us you grew up near there. Would you really be able to find it in your heart to be lenient to those of the SS (Liebstandarte or Das Reich?) who destroyed Oradour and its inhabitants in 1944?

Of course the Lancaster looks better in the dark, you can’t see the dust. I have been twice in the last two years and each time it gets worse. Why don’t they just scrap the Battle? It’s perfectly obvious the RAF Museum are ashamed to have it as part of their collection. It’s one of the aircraft I would really like to see, it is evocative of the sacrifice of the RAF during May, 1940, and where is it? Tucked away so it can barely be seen. Cruise missile in Milestones of Flight. Why? Is it because it represents the technology which allows the wrong country to be hit? The black hole that is the Bomber Command Hall might as well be closed half the time. The only way to get decent photos is to use a timed exposure and a tripod which due to the amount of people milling around is not really that practical.

I can cope with the BoB Hall, education ensures that future generations might have at least some of the feeling for that period which we all share.

I don’t know about a petition but perhaps what they really need is a whip round to pay the electricity bill!

If they’re executing 10,000 every year that just about finishes any argument you might have that the death sentence is a deterrent. Otherwise they would need to execute less and less people each year. On the other hand, it might be a suitable punishment for their crimes, but that’s something different.

I respect Hand and Geforce’s views, but, in Hand’s case, I would refer him to Oradour-sur-Glane. Can he honestly tell me that he would try to rehabilitate the men of the SS for the crimes committed there?

As for Brenmcc, when people are trying to debate something seriously, grow up and use a little common sense. Unless you have something valid to contribute to the debate don’t say anything. The crass comments you make which you misguidedly think portray you to the forum as a great wit do exactly the opposite. Can characters like Brenmcc really represent the future for Britain?

This intellectual ‘dumbing down’ does not bode well for the future.

Has A380 EVER posted information which is of any use? Has he/she EVER gone to the trouble of doing a bit of research to help others? Has A380 ever gone to the trouble of using their own spare time to find answers to questions that someone has asked? Can’t remember any occasion.

Flood has, and been of great help, so don’t knock it till you can stand in that position.

Fora have always had problems like this. No way in the world will everyone ALL agree on something. That’s the beauty of discussion forums like these.

The Historic forum is generally quite serious with a huge range of relevant topics discussed and a vast amount of knowledge and help is exchanged.

The commercial forum is fairly similar although an influx of new members have perhaps given the forum a bit of a new slant. The really fantastic thing about this forum is the number of people who work in the industry, and the fact that they are so approachable and eager to answer any queries.

The military forum I tend to keep away from. As an irregular user of that forum I have to say it interests me little and to be honest I find much of it is written in a language I find unfamiliar. But no-one can deny its poipularity.

The GA forum is an interesting place but again is targeted at an area I am not familiar with.

Now the GD forum, or, as I have come to think of it, Care in the Community. This is a great place with more than its fair share of sheer lunacy. But look at some of the discussions we have had over time. They have been serious and well thought out. And enlightening. It’s ok Comet going on about getting back to a discussion forum, so start a discussion. Not the usual vitriol, angst and sheer bloody-mindedness that passes for discussion on occasion. Discussion – the exchange of views, not a verbal gunfight.

So, it’s all in our own hands really isn’t it? Make the forum what you want it to be. If a thread is not to your liking don’t visit it again, you are NOT FORCED INTO READING WHAT YOU DON’T WANT TO.

Simple really, don’t you agree?

So in Vietnam US troops weren’t joyous over the death of ‘Charlie’ or ‘Victor Charles’? Don’t be silly. Body counts were grossly inflated. The practice of collecting ears from the dead, you consider that to be normal? And not a sign of joyousness? The numerous photographs that exist of dead Vietnamese with playing cards adorning their bodies or in some other grotesque pose. Those are examples of Americans asking for God’s blessing?

America has proclaimed that they have liberated Iraq which is not strictly true. They have deposed Hussein and unleashed a maelstrom of violence they cannot control. Is that really liberation?

And that might yet happen. Another 12 Marines dead, how many wounded? Aren’t some American reporters already calling Iraq ‘Bush’s Vietnam’? Just how many body bags are the American people prepared to accept?

If you live in America you already are. Iraq and Afghanistan are conquests of Bush Junior. Both countries were invaded by America. Did America not ignore the UN by invading Iraq? America only listens to the UN when it suits their purposes.
