A nice selection of pics there, the place is certainly getting a lot busier these days. The outdoor viewing area is just to the left of the Aer Lingus 146 and the aircraft would have passed about fifty yards in front of you.

I was so impressed I never even looked for the registration! Do you think it shows that the Captain flies a Spitfire in South Africa and has flown with several aerobatic teams.

Even Myrtle Avenue will seem boring after this.

I suspect you know a bit about the dumping of aircraft off the coast of Australia. Is there any chance you can tell us a bit more of what you know please.

Yes I did, it was G-BMXD. The 727 was a private 727, N727M belonging to the ‘Nomads’ which I suspect are a sports team of some sort.

Glad to see you had a good time last week. Quite a haul there. Interesting to see the Herald G-ATIG, that used to be at BHX every week in the mid-seventies, thought it would have been scrapped a long time ago. So I hope you got a photo.

Future Pilot, your best bet would be to use the outdoor viewing area. The Police move anyone on the A45. If you’re driving park in the long stay car park (5 pounds for up to 8 hours.) or if you have to walk come up past the Eurohub and turn right. The grass are has several benches and gives a good view of the Eurohub apron and is great for landing shots when aircraft are using 33. Aircraft taxiing to take off on 33 will come very close to the fence. If 15 is used they taxi past you at the end of their landing roll. NOTE: The outdoor toilet facilities are closed but you can always walk down to the Aviation Experience or catch the free courtesy bus. I shoot through the fence with a digital camera so photography isn’t bad. I’ll post an example below.

The ship is definitely HMS Pioneer.

Had a good look with a magnifying glass and these are the aircraft I think I have identified.

1. Possibly an Avenger?
2. Aircraft head on with three bladed prop?
3. Possibly a Corsair.
4. Avenger almost head on.
5. Avenger with ‘N’ on tail.
6. First a/c aft of the superstructure is an Avenger, tail on.
7. Avenger, tail on
8. Corsair, ‘P’ on tail and ’24’ on fuselage.
9. Avenger.
10. Corsair facing forward.
11. Avenger.
12. Corsair, ‘3’ on fuselage, ‘P’ on tail.
13. Corsair, coded ’12V4′.
14. Another tail, possibly Avenger.

They’re going to use the new Dash 8 400’s as airborne fuel tankers to refuel the 146’s in flight. A nice long fuel tank the length of the cabin, that’;s why they made them that shape, so the fuel tanks fitted. The will use a single hose and drogue unit under the tail. Simple.

You know, I think it might catch on.

I thought Wildcats too. Did the FAA use Hellcats though? And if we’re talking about late 1945 wouldn’t all the Wildcats already have been either lost or withdrawn from service?

DIGBY and Mark 12.

You guys are quick off the mark tonight. I think the docks might be Southampton. And the ship is a maintenance carrier, HMS Pioneer. So you think it’s likely to be off the coast of Australia. These photos belonged to the father of a family friend and have just come to light. There may be more to come. Australia fits as this chap was an aircraft engineer in the FAA and definitely went to Australia.

Can anyone identify the aircraft on board the carrier please?
