Interesting.

Two days of training covering many security aspects with some of the time being spent practicing weapon firing. A 0.40″ calibre weapon, (nearly half an inch! They only had .50’s on B-17’s), it just sounds like a recipe for disaster. Some film was shown on Sky News today of the training and of an exercise where sky marshalls took on and disarmed terrorists. I think it gave a false impression. In the main, todays terrorists want to kill large numbers of people and don’t mind dying in the process themselves. They are fanatics.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong, and that the arming of pilots does become an effective deterrent. I’m just wondering how long it will be before someone goes into the air as an airline pilot and returns as John Wayne.

I would think a good place to start would be the Aircrew Association, they might be able to put you in touch with others who could help. Your local branch of the RAFA might be helpful. The RAFA do have a website so if you can finf that address it might be worth pursuing. I think there might be an Air Gunners association too! A list of useful addresses appears about every three months in flypast. Another idea might be to put a letter in your local paper asking any veterans to contact you.

I think the essential point is that many of the people in Britain do not wish to have closer ties to Europe. Our previous alliances to European nations have cost us dear. We revel in our national identity and individuality and have no need or desire to forge closer links with Europe. The integration you suggest was tried between the years of 1939 and 1945 and those nations occupied were certainly relieved to be liberated.

Personally I believe the British people would rather be assimilated by the Borg than face deeper integration into Europe.

Also read about the new building. If it does come to fruition it will be huge. It’s a massive expanse of grass between the two hangars they hope to connect and already in that area are the Trident, Victor, Vulcan, Canberra, Varsity and Argosy. There is still a huge amount of unoccupied space. The Vulcan, Victor, Varsity, Canberra and Argosy are all looking a bit rough externally, particularly the Vulcan and Victor. The Belfast does look smart now in it’s new coat.

Might be controversial but I’d like to see the experimental airframes moved (with the exception of the TSR2:) ), perhaps to somewhere more linked with the development of aviation, maybe Filton or Woodford? Somewhere to do with design and manufacture or testing. Maybe even Farnborough? Perhaps then some of the RAFM’s airframes which are held in reserve could be made more accessible to the public.
