The aircraft in your picture are the ‘Angel Interceptors’ flown by the Angels, Rhapsody, Harmony and Melody. The arch enemies of Captain Scarlet and his sidekick Captain Blue were the ‘Mysterons’ and their agent inside Spectrum Captain Black. See if you can find a photo of an SPV or Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, I’m sure you’ll like it. Dave and I probably had most of the toys that went with these programmes but like everything else they get thrown or given away. We’d probably be worth a fortune if we’d kept them.

do you remember Land of the Giants? That was something else. Space 1999 was OK but UFO was brilliant. Of course I remember the whacky races and Catch the pigeon.

I never liked Supercar. Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet were more my kind of programme. Those were the days, pretending you were interested in a historical programme, just so you could stop up later, reliving the ’66 World Cup final with my Dad across the backyard five minutes after it finished, playing in the street safe in the knowledge you weren’t about to be killed by an artic. None of this Playstation or Nintendo rubbish, we had to make our own entertainment in them days, none of this ‘en suite’ business, we lived in a cardboard box in’t middle o’t road……..

The scary thing is I’m beginning to sound just like my Dad.

Eastenders plays a pivotal role, along with Emmerdale and Coronation Street, in British Society. As you say Eastenders is probably the most miserable soap opera on tv, one can imagine if you are depressed it would drive you either to suicide or make you feel better knowing someone else’s plight is far worse than your own. The plot lines in these programmes are often so implausible as to beggar belief. Coronation Street and Emmerdale are generally far ‘lighter’ in their story lines but still pile on the agony.

Take Coronation Street, it is supposed to depict everyday life in a northern town. In the last two years there has been a rape, four murders (and the murderer is still free), a fatal shooting, several car crashes, at least one mugging, a 14 year old girl becoming pregnant, an abortion (unrelated), drug smuggling and numerous extra-marital affairs. I don’t know about you but if I lived in that street I’d move.

There is no escape. I don’t watch these programmes at all but the stories are depicted in the newspapers as though they are real.
