American merchant vessels were being sunk, yes. But not at the insistence of the US Government. Shipping lines were falling over themselves to profit from the contracts on offer.

Again yes, but again not at the insistence of the Government. Many, many individuals joined the war long before Pearl Harbor, and grateful we are for their courage, and in many cases their sacrifice. Don’t try to say that it was at the instigation of the Government because it wasn’t. Many of these individuals said they volunteered to fight because they believed it was the right thing to do, and were disgusted at their Government for not entering the war earlier.

You soon solved that problem by passing these World War One era warships to the Allies as part of lend-lease. They obviously weren’t good enough for Americans to go to war in, but they served the British well enough.

Stupid statement. After all, wasn’t it America that said something along the lines of ‘give me your tired, your weary, your disposessed…’ With a country many, many times the size of the UK isn’t it to be expected you could take more? How many times a week do these ‘refugees’ come knocking your door begging each week? And then an hour later you see them sat in their BMW or Mercedes counting how much they have collected. The majority of them are nothing more than economic migrants who claim every social security benefit they can then disappear when work and taxes are mentioned.

Some are, and deserve better, but in my experience the majority are not.

Yes they were. And I will be eternally grateful for that. So grateful in fact that I would not be prepared to send more young people to die in the name of some ill-conceived operation of questionable need or legality to satisfy the whim of an American President who has shown himself to be one of the worst in American history.

Errrr 1939-1945 mean anything to you? If it wasn’t for Britain and the Commonwealth’s stand in the early years of the war you Americans would never have been able to make ‘Band of Brothers.’

Maybe not, but we do seem to be taking in an awful lot of refugees/asylum seekers. How many live in your town Scooter?

Only as long as they do Americas bidding. Can you honestly tell me if America invade Iraq and hold democratic elections they would allow extremists to stand for election even if they have popular support? I think not.

It seems that much of the world feel a war with Iraq is unnecessary and wrong. Even the weapons inspectors seem to indicate that war with Iraq is not necessarily the right thing to do. So, here’s a novel idea, why doesn’t America show some solidarity with the rest of the world? That way we might be able to avoid a war………

You also have the audacity to accuse others of double standards. If America is displaying altruistic motives over the plight of the people of Iraq why then do they not show the same concern over the people of North Korea? Rwanda? Chechnya? You try to use historical events to support your argument but that really falls rather flat when America showed no concern over the plight of the peoples of France, Holland, Belgium, Norway, Denmark and Poland, amongst others, until your hand was forced on December 7th 1941.

Scooter, debate does mean discussion and the putting forward of views contrary to the original post, that’s what a discussion forum is. Now, if you want to post a topic, let’s say ‘Is George Bush a good leader’ you can expect to get quite a healthy debate, whether you’ll get many to say he is is a different matter.

It’s like everyone says, not all topics are going to be interesting to all people. Anyway, the GD forum can’t be doing too bad as it has reached it’s 1000th topic.

You don’t get anyone else’s opinion for the simple reason that you just don’t want to. Of course the French wanted to be free, that’s why many died in the service of the Resistance, as others did in many occupied countries. Ever heard of the Iraqi resistance? Oh yes, they were slaughtered in their thousands when America’s promise of help failed to materialise. And you talk about dirt on people’s hands?

RE: Air Historical Branch

I’ve mentioned them before after I approached them for information on an air bomber lost in a Lancaster in 1942. They ask you to send your query in writing and then give you what information they have. Generally, I think it’s very limited. In my case they could tell me nothing I hadn’t already found out, but from what I can gather there are cases where significantly more information is available. They will give information on a specific aircraft as well. As it’s the Air Historical Branch og the MOD I assume they deal mainly with the RAF.

I think I posted the new address and phone number on a previous thread of yours. It’s worth giving them a ring as they are very approachable and will give you a better idea of what they can offer.
