The man I would definitely NOT like to have been that day would have been General Longstreet. A man already overburdened by anguish at the loss of his family was forced to send Pickett’s division into a charge he knew in his heart would fail. His absolution from blame, from General Robert E Lee, must have been cold comfort as they counted the survivors of that disastrous charge.

Meade was too cautious. The soldiers of the Army of the Potomac were at their peak of confidence following Pickett’s charge. It seems incomprehensible now that they did not pursue the ANV immediately. Buford’s cavalry was weakened after their action on Seminary Ridge but could still have wreaked havoc on a broken army. The defeat may well have become a rout. As it is, the war was to last for a further two bl**dy years.

This action took place during the battle of Gettysburg and this courageous defence probably saved the Union Army and was thereby the turning point of the American Civil War.

You’re a pilot, be imaginative. Now I was thinking about a radio controlled aircraft equipped with, oh, I don’t know, shall we say a 12g tungsten dart and a maglite torch. Give the little beggars a while to get used to the noise, keep your cats on guard duty and get them to call you for air support. Hours of fun for all the family.

I think it all rather depends on your particular outlook. As an atheist I have absolutely no time for the religious sentiment. To me a Christmas carol is a good tune ruined. However, I do respect those who see Christmas in those terms. I see Christmas as a time to perhaps show my appreciation to loved ones for their love, their friendship and occasionally their tolerance. As for it being too commercial? Well those of us who are sensible realise we have only a finite amount of money to spend and ultimately it really is the thought (or lack of it) that goes into a gift that counts.

I’m 41 now but my most memorable Christmas present is still receiving a battered wristwatch case when I was about three. I opened it and it was stuffed full of threepenny bits and I thought it was all the money in the world. I soon learned different. I suppose it remains especially poignant as it was the last Christmas gift I was ever to receive from that person. So now, on Christmas night, I drink a glass of whisky in his memory.

I think Whalebone has the seeds of an idea there. Why not give it a couple of years of intensive effort and see how far it can go? The stipulation being that should this appeal to the airshow public fail, all monies raised go towards keeping 558 in a taxiable condition at Bruntingthorpe. Should the appeal succed or fail, apply again to the HLF for support in funding a permanent hangar at Bruntingthorpe, with the possible added kudos of supplying hagarage for the world’s only airworthy Avro Vulcan.

They’ve come this far, haven’t they earned the right to go that bit further?
