Try covering your eyes; then you won’t see them. 🙂

Yeah, Naval Forces isn’t that great for arms deals news in the Asian theater. Like you said, if you want decent information, then get one of those Chinese defense magazines. Otherwise, MilTech or Armada just don’t cut it; although they do have nice pictures.

I agree. The Pinkov stuff does not help them, especially when he tries to pass them off as his photos. They are better off reading from the forums than paying him to do the reading and writing for them.

All i am saying is that i treat Janes as just source of information that should not be completely ignored and thrown out of the windows. The lack of coverage on PRC and other Eastern defence arrangements/deals/projects is a inherent weakness of Western based defence publications. You get the same spotty coverage from Naval Forces. Local based mags like Asia Defence Journal are better in the sense that they have a regional focus on some nation but in some areas, are no better. The only good ones would be mainland publications and dedicated TW mags like DTM but it would require these western publishers to have a section just to do the translation.

Although, I think Pinkov is fine for reporting defense news; afterall, he does have contacts in the Russian and Japanese militaries that are always helpful. It’s his geopolitical analyses that are sorely lacking.

Not true. They have their sources in the defense industry as well as the military, government. Janes had been around for decades. How do u think they had operated before the internet existed?

And that is their main problem these days. Traditional sources tend to be slower than the internet. They are pretty well covered in relatively open defence sectors like Europe/West but score poorly in ‘closed’ sectors like PRC.

If you look at the pre-1999 (Internet) days, the Janes articles on the PLA were few and far between, and usually lacking in details and pictures. Now when you look at their reports, they’re usually written post facto, after the photographic evidence has been visited on various websites. And, more often than not, their China section is written by Pinkov, at least for JDW.

I’ve also lost respect for Jane’s on account of a strong suspicion of mine that one of their authors plagiarized my research paper.

Er, hello. You might want to check the modern military aviation forum though.

Heck, Jane’s gets most of their information from the net anyway, so I’d rate Janes and CMF as equivalent.

    JANE’S DEFENCE WEEKLY – SEPTEMBER 15, 2004

Sweden set to approve Erieye for Pakistan
    José Higuera JDW Correspondent
    Santiago

The Swedish government is close to approving the export to Pakistan of a number of Saab 2000 aircraft equipped with the Ericsson Erieye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) radar and its associated mission system.

“There are high chances that a favourable decision will be made late this year or early in 2005,” a Saab official told JDW in Stockholm.

The executive explained that “substantial advances have been made in the study of the situation by the foreign ministry and the defence and foreign relations committees in the Swedish parliament, with consideration being given to the fact that Erieye is not a weapon, but a surveillance and early-warning system that contributes to the avoidance of aggression and conflict”.

The Saab official said that Pakistan wants the Erieye AEW&C system to be installed in specially upgraded Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft, which, he said, offers Islamabad the best option in terms of cost, performance and logistics. He explained that the Embraer ERJ-145 short-haul commuter aircraft, selected by Brazil, Greece and Mexico as a platform for the Erieye, is more expensive and its altitude performance unsuitable in the high-and-hot conditions found in Pakistan.

Pakistan International Airlines is evaluating the Saab 2000 for use on its domestic routes.

The integration of the Erieye in the Saab 2000 will not pose a challenge for Saab, as the aircraft is very similar to the Saab 340, already in service with the Swedish Air Force.

Sweden is also understood to be considering the replacement of its S 100B Argus, as the Saab 340B-AEW aircraft is designated, with Saab 2000s to ostensibly extend the mission range capabilities of the Erieye.

The Allison/Rolls-Royce AE2100A-powered Saab 2000 can remain aloft for more than nine hours at altitudes up to 9,000m, a significant gain on the performance of the GE CT7-9B-powered Saab 340, according to a Saab spokesman.

The Saab official source added that the larger internal volume of the Saab 2000 allows for the installation of extra consoles, other work stations and communications equipment, configuring the aircraft as a flying C2 post.

The source confirmed that while the Saab 2000 assembly line was closed in 1999, Saab has enough aircraft left in its inventory to fulfil orders from Pakistan, Sweden and other markets.

    They are for chaff/flare launchers.

I don’t think we know the exact purpose of those 122mm launchers yet. Unless you have a better source….?

May I point you on the fact that either I have missed some news while at sea, or that you are talking rubbish and that PLAN only has about 8 real confirmed Helixes.
There is also the fact that all the ships you just mention only carry one Helix. Maybe you meant that and my English isn’t good enough…

Although there you still have RUMORS about that 093. And the additional Kilo argument was what I meant with: “not that that makes a difference in a current situation exercise”. Otherwise I should have stated that India is buying some of the Amur class together with Scorpene class for a total of 24 new SSKs.
They are also working on a Orion deal to add these to the May planes they already have.

Actually, China has at least 10 Helixes, or Helices? According to Jane’s FIghting Ships, updated May 13, 2004, they have 6 Ka 28PL ASW helicopters acquired in 1997 for evaluation and 4 Ka 28PS for SAR delivered in late 1999.

I have read, in a few articles, that USAF F-15s had been challenged by Russian Flankers and had been badly outflown. Just recently as well, I believe a couple of Strike Eagles from the 48th FW were jumped by RAF Typhoons and were quickly outdueled after a mock engagement.
The F-15 is a great aircraft but I don’t think it will be able to keep up with the new jets which are presently entering service around the world.

Yes, that was in the recent exercise with Indian Flankers. However, it was emphasized in the article that the F-15s that partook in that ex were restricted in their full capabilities, but although the F-15 ought to be able to prevail, the Flankers give them something to think about.

    your car doesn’t cost 600.000$ 😀

still a expensive missile, especially since this is no radical new design, just an upgraded version, off course it’s better the a million+ for the block III

Yeah, but some Ferrari’s or other expensive exotic cars don’t even come witrh 15 year warranties.

$600K for an improved Tomahawk, is great IMO. Better than spending on those luxury porcelain toilets for transport aircraft and other bacon projects.
