It looks as thought they’re dismantling the Trimotor for the new owner. Was the P-38 still there, or has it been sold now as well? 🙁
Yes, I guess we’ll just have to put up with nothing but the French, Norwegian, US, Swiss, Austrian and German ones coming over this year then.
A letter in today’s DT says that the car he was travelling in is now preserved in Vienna. The number plate is A111118. The date the war ended. How strange is that?

I wonder what aircraft is next to make an appearance from their vaults ?
The S.E.5 I hope.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the (aptly-named) Mystery Ship were to make an appearance too!
Is it a secret? Or are we allowed to know what it was? 🙂
I just hope we get ample opportunity to see it in the air. Their Bristol Fighter was lovely, but its public flying career lasted exactly one week before being parked for eternity. 🙁
……make their donation cheques for £10 payable to ……….
The Shuttleworth Collection. 🙂
Great to see real progress being made on the Vega. When I visited Kevin Kimball about 18 months ago he had just taken delivery of the project and was about to start tearing into the wing.
With John Desmond’s one coming along nicely too, we may see a three-ship at Oshkosh eventually. 🙂
Or Shuttleworth Meet the Pilots/Uncovered/whatever they’re calling it this week.
Reliable = turns up when booked. Not the same thing as serviceability. If anything, not bothering to turn up for a confirmed booking because it is no longer convenient is more harmful to their image than weather or unservicability.
The engine had a mis-detonation and threw a rod which then decided to chop thru the crankcase
And a day or so afterwards one of the crew over-filled an oxygen bottle which exploded and broke the aircraft’s back (fortunately without harming anyone). Stu had it fixed for the following year though, he’s a top bloke!
Yes, it does seen to be about as reliable as a chocolate teapot. I believe that Duxford have publicly stated that they won’t book it due to being let down in the past, and that’s the second time to my knowledge that the Vulcan has pulled a no-show at Old Warden.
There are no FRS1s surviving. The nearest thing is Yeovilton’s, which is a GR3 airframe with a nose from a crashed FRS1 grafted on the front. All the remaining ones were converted to FA2s.
The Italians do too
It is the one that lurked in the back of a hangar at Redhill for many years.
