I used to go to many of the East Anglian shows from the early-80s on. Mildenhall, Lakenheath, Wyton, Marham, Alconbury, Bentwaters. I can’t recall ANY of them being free.
Ice pilots? Firefighting in Greece? I somehow think not! 🙂
Not in my lifetime can I remember a free airshow? Where were these? I clearly missed them…
To be entirely fair, the only ones I can think of these days are the seaside airshows.
It’s not so long ago that most events were free
Seriously? Maybe in the 1930s. I’ve been going to airshows for over 40 years and there has almost always been an admission charge throughout that time.
I do sometimes wonder what colour the sky is on your planet WH904, you somehow don’t seem to inhabit the same one as the rest of us.
Too late for that, there’s already a teeny tiny pair of legs popping out from the 109! 😀
I don’t buy that for one second, just look at the massive public support for the ‘Two Lancasters’ fandango last summer
Like they did this past week with the DB-engined Buchon?
How can an aeroplane make a gesture? I’m intrigued…
A couple of years ago complaints were rife that they had made the start time of ‘evening’ shows much earlier, making them into ‘afternoon’ shows. Now that they are back to proper evening shows (thank goodness!) there are complaints that they start too late. I guess the poor souls at OW just can’t win with some people. 🙁
At least nobody took potshots at you – I hear Germany is still overrun with elderly gents with 88s in their cellars! 🙂

I saw a couple of them in Maui about three years ago, apparently still in use.
🙂
From the photos of the recovered examples I’d say your guess of silver is a good one.
I would humbly suggest that a few of these ‘hoi polloi’ be admitted to shows in order that they may be allowed to bow their heads in reverence as you enter the airfield.
Oh, don’t worry, I won’t be there. I understand that it is no longer the done thing to pay to get into airshows, so I’ll be in the fields across the way hanging out with all the kool kidz.
