A brand new Mi-17V-5 goes anywhere between $11 and 14 million, I find a price tag of nearly $30 million for a helo which can do less hardly justifyable. That’s the price of politics, so it seems.
jesus, you absolutely miss the point, there is NO debate about some Mi-17, they are russian, so absolutely out of choice and IT´S the point to replace russian helos for western as soon as posible! It´s not about politics, but national safety! More, the price is not only about purchasing helicopters, but it is maximal price guarantied by US government for whole pack of helos, training pilots and technicians, spare parts, logistic device etc….
No doubt.. The question isn’t whether the old Mi-17s need replacing, the question is whether a $30mil Blackhawk is the right choice..
BTW, Czech AF has some new-built Mi-171Sh, what is your experience with these?
Well, these new Mi-171Š were of 1980s standard. Due to LOM Praha and US donation eight choppers were greatly modernised and digitalized and got flir, weather radar, new armouring, cominication devices, displeys etc. and seven of them got two miniguns. But rest eigth with rear doors are still in NATO uncompatibile standard… Mi-171Š is good hardware but outdated, these eight modernised Mi-171ŠM are maybe best Mi-17/171 in the world, but still all czech Mi-171 and old Mi-17 are dependent on russian spare parts delivering. Now Russians makes problem with it and more, Mil blocks certification of new Centrisep EAPS filters and combination of new armoured fuselage tank and external tanks under external wing. So Mi-171ŠM cannot flies with new armoured fuselage tanks and external tanks under wing. For long range mission technicians must change new armoured tanks for old original for use external tanks, what stupidity, due to Russian obstruction.
This summer czech government will announce tender for new 12 – 18 medium western multirole helicopters (including CSAR, CAS, AT capability) as replacement for Mi-24/35 and all Mi-17 and Mi-171 will be phase out during next 10 years and replaced with new heavy western helicopter… Only W-3A stays in Czech Air Force service
Looks like a FMS deal? Which version is being procured?
Anyway, $29 mil for a hauler with half the carrying capacity of an Mi-171… Hardly a deal of the century..
For sure deal of the even two centuries because replacing for pieceses of **** from the 1980s…. at last! Memento of the An-24 5605 is still alive
It’s definitive, czech ministry of defence has annouced Mi-24/35 age terminates during years 2016 and 2018. It will replaced with multirole helicopter with antiground attact capabilities, tender for new probably 16 examles of a western type helicopter will start in 2016 and first batch ot them has to be delivered in 2017.
Question is what type is suitable for Czech Air Force…
Czech Ministry of Defence has annouced not only confirmation of L-159’s sell plan to Iraq but complex solution for stored planes. Part will be sold to Draken, part to Irak, and rest will be rebuilded into twoseaters for CzAF. So according the plan in 2017 Czech Air Force has 16 singleseaters for 212. tactical squadron and 8 twoseaters of L-159 for 213. training squadron and no stored plane…
Czech government approves sale of fighter jets to Iraq

as I have said, nobody here in the Czechlands know anything about the contract´s cancellation… But minister of defence has said: we want to sell the aircrafts to Iraq up to two years (he has meant “to supply”)…
Operation Daybreak is only comedy… with a lot of historical lapses. It’s too funny to see english actress with “skin ” faces to simulate czech emotional and proud elite czech soldiers in action… Czech elite actors from the 1960s knew about their emotions much more and they shown it on authentic places…
So I am realy afraid about first big czech story in hollywood production… realy afraid….

sad to see that the L159 seems cursed not to be sold. Would have been a nice little jet for us IMHO.
It´s funny that people always think that an aircraft from small country is automaticaly small/little plane 🙂

ask yourself, why the US sold theF-16 to Irak?
if it’s not with the intention to deliver (the situation in Irak is nothing new), where I live it’s called “theft”, “robbery”…
Now, maybe the Irakis were, rightfully so, fed up of paying for fighters they aten’t anywhere near getting “for security reasons” and prefer to pay for something they actually get… Who could blame them?
they didn´t know it in september?? They could get L-159 instantly, even Czech Air Force offered own further aircrafts from active service instantly (what a stupidity!) and where is a result? Nobody blame Irak, As I said it was huge stupidity of Czech goverment to accept Iraqi interest in L-159 for second time and that is way decrease contract with Draken. Thing goes in right way now, but in fact nobody here know anything about the end of contract. It will be nice to see medial blast after leak of this new fact… I have send some tip to my journalist coleagues 🙂 I will enjoy the face look of ministry of defence and chiefs of Aero as reaction on questions like “again sell fail? You were talking about sure thing, Mr. Stropnický”, heh. My words came true… Czech officials are still huge idiots… and capability of 212. tactical squadron and 213. training squadron are preserved, it´s good news now.
double
er, the “collector” might not appreciate to have bought fighters, which, in case you missed it, remain kept by the vendor. they have a war on their soil and the much needed weapons they bought aren’t delivered, leaving them dependant on foreign air forces for strike missions against IS
really? Nice way of thinking, or maybe there is absolutely lack of conception from start of new Irak army construction, corruption and war between political sects there…
further to this…
Confirmation from the Iraqi MOD:
1- that they stopped the purchase of any L159s from Czech Republic.
2- They have agreed with the US on delaying further payments for the F16IQ3- Funds have been reallocated to buy “sukhois” and large volumes of munitions.
4- They have speeded up the work on the T50-IQ with South Korea (they were originally scheduled for January 2016 delivery)
5- There is also unconfirmed news about the UAE donating 6x Super Tucanos and 10x Mirage-2000-9s to Iraq
6- Iraqi Army aviation also finally confirmed without a shadow of a doubt that they will not buy Apaches or AT6C texans and that Orders with Russia will be increased.
7- Russia has agreed to sell Iraq weapons with deferred payments.
So that’s the “state of play” as of now.
As I said “excelent” idea to make a deal with Iraq, as I said…
I am happy that all stored Alcas will go in country of the Uncle Sam, to real business and technical partner, not to absolutely unfaithful eclectic collector of weapons from around the World…
Didn’t some East European (Communist Country ?) modify an Li.2 to look like a Wellington, for a film ? I seem to remember seeing a picture of itmany years ago.
It was happend in CENTRAL European country, in Czechoslovakia, before communistic ruskie occupation, in 1967-1968 for best Czech war movie ever Nebeští jezdci on base of Richard Husmann’s novel. Husmann was former member of 311. Czechoslovak squadron in GB and leter 3. Czechoslovak attach regiment in USSR. In Aero Vodochody at that time they rebuilted Li-2F, former OK-GAD of ČSA, later number 2209 of Czechoslovak air force, into Wellington OJ-F.
