I see myself as an adopted yellow belly. I’ll be finished here next year though 🙁 Will miss that view out of the window.

I passed newark in the car the other day, the place seems to have changed. Certainly one of the UKs finest ‘small’ museums.

Im with Gnome on this one. As a piece of History, its valuable but the idea of playing the game today is rather crass when it is out of the original context. However, if people want to play at being second world war airmen then go ahead. The Coventry analogy is an extremely valid one.

It has little to do with Political Correctness, despite Moggys mildy amusing aside which with its sadly bitter undertones, is hardly the voice of moderation. This really has more to do with taste, something which that picture, and parts of this thread have little of.

Dave, thanks for sharing the informatiom. May I suggest that this is something that would be more suitable as a display item in a museum, showing off duty life for airmen in WW2? That way it would be in a much clearer context than in a pub, circa 2004.

CHANNEL 4 have a website for the show, there is an online game you can play to experience a bombing mission, to quote the site

“How did it feel to take the controls of an Avro Lancaster on a a night-time bombing raid? To find out, play Bomber Crew- The Raid”

amazing game, that must have been just what it was like for the RAF Bomber Command crews!

Personally I’d rather see it scrapped than restored to fly, shown to millions of people each summer at airshows (many of whom would otherwise never get to see one in the air) but painted in an inappropriate colour scheme.

But Mike, it is entirely appropriate, Red Bull fly aircraft to celebrate Historic Aviation and to promote the Red Bull Brand. As im sure you realise, they are not a memorial flight in the way that the BBMF are. Therefore if they were (emphasising the IF) to purchase this P38 and use it in this context then why not. Its just furthering the aircrafts life. Warplane-Racer-Airshow performer/ Advertiser. Just another chapter in the aircraft’s history.

I cant believe you seriously mean that Mike. If you were at an airshow in which it was to appear, and imagine that you had never seen a P38 fly, would you seriously turn your back and cover your ears, hoping for it to be scrapped? I’d bet you turn arond and enjoy every moment of it!

    Best Regards, Steve 🙂

I learned to fly Gliders at Burn a few years ago. Sadly I am at Uni now and don’t have access to my pictures but I can tell you that there is little left at Burn apart from the water tower and runways which are all present. There is a memorial and the odd building scattered around though.

May I recommend these web pages

QUOTE=J Boyle] If it weren’t for guys like him, the historic aviation hobby would consist of going to static museums, looking through musty copies of Janes and building Airfix kits.
As opposed to taking valuable historic aircraft parts and then altering them to look like an Historic aircraft. Thats not Historic Aviation. He’s building a racing plane that bares a passing resemblance to an MB5. Im sure in one interview the man behind it said that the dimensions of the aircraft had to be altered so that it would fit in his hanger! Interesting approach. The way I look at it is that he’s enjoying himself making the aircraft and will undoubtedly have much fun flying it, best of luck to him but I still think it’s a pointless exercise. Didnt he sell his p51 to fund this?

Well done Hatton. Not sure what i’ve raised yet, but think around £200. Same time next year?!

Definately. Just think, if everyone on the forum was to give a few hours collecting in the street then it would be a huge amount. A thought for next year perhaps.

Aslong as the builder of this lookalike is happy then I guess thats the main thing. Personally I can’t see the point in spending so much money and time on an end product that fails to look like the original on so many counts.
