Snapper, it was your post on here a while back that spurred me into doing my bit this year, so many thanks.
I’ve spent a morning and an afternoon selling Poppies just opposite Lincoln Cathedral and I must admit it got a positive reaction. One of the strangest incidents I experienced though was when a group of three, admittedly quite scruffy and noisy, teenagers came up and deposited quite a large amount of change in the box. I thanked them and they thanked me but they would not wear a poppy or a sticker despite clearly supporting the campaign. It seemed sad that they didnt feel comfortable enough to wear them.
thats very kind of you Papa Lima. Many thanks, that will be a great help!
here she is,
another blockship…
great pictures Ian, i’d wondered what the temporary rail network had looked like, fascinating stuff.
I think the local base in the book was Coltishall and it even mentions a certain Lancaster that would have been based there at the time.
“There’s no way it would fit in my hangars and I just hope it goes to a good
home”
it deserves at least one good home in its post r.a.f life !!!
£1,000,203.03 now 🙂 anyone would think someone is having a laugh 🙂
correction………..91,000
its at 76,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the replies, I shall post pictures next week on my return 🙂 I will able to check the forum till tomorrow afternoon so any more ideas would be appreciated.
My bottom line is – if its a unique example of a machine then keep it in an accurate scheme for the benefit of those who didnt see them when they were in service. If there are several examples around then use one of them as an advertising board, as long as there are some accurate ones also.
fair enough Kodak, but when the unique example deperately needs the sponsorship to fly, what then?
and also, why can’t an aircraft have a service life other than its military one? This aircraft is now employed as a display aircraft and a flying advertisement for Red Bull. For this role, the scheme it wears is entirely accurate. Wait a second! If the Sea Vixen was in RN colours, wouldn’t it be inaccurate as it is no longer an RN Machine 🙂 Ha! Im not sure whether my tongue is firmly in cheek for that one or not 🙂
I wouldn’t expect a reply from Bertie, it so often happens, A member makes a quite clearly unacceptable remark and then disappears rather than apologise. A bit like what happened with the English Comedian / Spitfire thread.
Thanks for keeping us up to date Ashely,
David, do you know a rough figure on how much it would cost to obtain a Chipmunk in full flying condition? Just out of curiosity.
best regards, steve
Modest Peter, have a look at his great site for a few pictures of some of the remains,
