If you want to take photos, I’ll do my best to interpret them for you, although I suspect they will all look like piles of concrete rubble.
if I make it there I will be sure to post some pictures 🙂 thanks again for your informative replies
[QUOTE=”1stThings1st”]Hatton…..
I get the impression (feathered) bird watching is also your “thing”; if so – and you are going to Shetland – perhaps you should have a look at the front page headline in the Independant today, HERE!
Thanks for your reply, very interesting link, im not actually a bird watcher at all but Ive always wanted to go to the shetlands and since bird colonies are one of the things the island is famous for, I thought I would give it a try. Im sure it will be interesting.
Those naval guns sound interetsing, are they just remains or are they pretty much intact?
Bless 🙂 If he likes aircraft with ‘faces’ then he’ll love the Buchon. If ever there was an aircraft with a grin, it is that one.
Thanks, Landyman, that is very kind of you.
Glad it went well mate, glad to see another future historic aviation enthusiast hooked onto the Lanc. Have you taken him up to East Kirkby yet?
Steve, I trust you’ll be providing piccies on your return…? I’d be fascinated to see what you find. 🙂
I most certainly shall, will be taking the 35mm SLR nad also the Digital camera too so should have a few pictures to share. Im hoping to take photographs of the bird colonies and also landscapes too. May take the tripod but Im still debating this as I will have to carry it for over a week 🙁 along with the tent/sleeping bag and camera gear.
If people want, I will post non avaition pictures too if they are of any interest to any one. One night we are paying a visit to an abandoned manor house of some kind called ‘windhouse’ its apparently haunted according to the visitshetland website. It challenges visitors to camp overnight in the ruins, should be fun.
Best Regards, Steve
ps-steve, did your brithday trip to Coningsby go well or hasnt that occured yet?
Radar Archive, no need but thanks for the offer. A google search has found em a grid reference. OS Sheet 4 212717. Should suffice I think. Ive also found out that there is an abandoned radar station from the second world war present also. This may be worth an exploration.
Looks like they may have found at least enough parts to reconstruct at least one example.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!It must be a very substantial find, i hope you are right.
Thanks for everyones replys so far.
As for Fair Isle, RadarArchive, we could very well end up there. Do you have any more info on location of wreck. Basically we are just getting the ferry from Aberdeen and then playing it by ear. We have no accomadation, no transport, just a tent and our feet 🙂 Will be using public transport too plus Im hoping to have an island hopping flight in a trislander or a DH Twin Otter.
best regards, steve
Hi Hatton, i am sure i have seen a 1/48th spirit of st louis someplace, maybe by SMER but i am not too sure. try asking on the http://www.finescale.com forum, someone there will know for sure.
Greg
Thanks Landyman i am doing just that right now.
Two guys behind me on departures day at Fairford last week were waiting patiently and excitedly for the last remaining Phantom on the airfield to taxi and take off. ” Its been years since I last saw a British Phantom fly” the one guy said to his mate. I didn’t have the heart to tell them they were in fact staring hopefully at XV408, which of course is sadly awaiting the scrap man. 😡
Plazz
PLazz, you do realise they may have stayed there till very late waiting since you didnt tell them! 🙂 haha
sounds like a good idea, will certainly do that. the idea was to go up to have a look at the bird colonies and just explore a bit but it is always worth keeping your eye out or ears open for some aviation heritage!
will keep searching google also for info. Thanks again.
Ive had a pretty extensive web search and i can’t find anything 🙁
Cees, I had just presumed their wouldnt be much left. Are there any well knwon sites/memorials?
has anoyone done any Spirit of St.Louis Kits, preferably large scale? I would love one of those if there was one.
