I don’t know how long it’s been since you’ve been out to these parts, Wrenchbender, but they’ve surely built quite a bit since the 80’s, that’s for sure. As I mentioned before, Chino is a booming area in terms of real estate. I purchased my home about 1.5 years ago and have already made a good chunk of change on it, and it’s not even that big. However, the area right around Chino Airport is still green with dairies remaining, but who knows for how long. I haven’t been to Norton, errrrrr, SBD Intl Airport in years. I mentioned in a thread about a month ago that I went by there in ’95 and saw Clipper Juan Trippe parked out there, but haven’t been by since. Before living in Chino with my parents, we lived in Highland which is where the former Norton is. I have found memories of C-141’s at an early age flying directly over out church on finals into Norton. There was quite a few of them based there in the early-mid 80’s.
Well, if VS’s LHR-NRT route is polar, wouldn’t JAL’s, ANA’s, and BA’s also be?

YVR – SYD yes but from Toronto abosolutely not!
A 744/343 can practically do SYD-YVR (it would be just a little further than SYD-SFO which the 744 currently does). I don’t know what the distance is between SYD and YYZ, but I wouldn’t say “absolutely not” unless you had some figures and data to back this up, Dartie. How much further can it be than SIN-LAX or DXB-SYD?

Indeed it is. 18 hours each way.

Is CX’s new non-stop HKG-JFK with the 346 a polar routing? The flights begin this year.
I would think so. ORD-HKG routings are polar, as is CO’s EWR-HKG, I believe.
Are those parked at Bournemouth?
I’m sure there were quite a few dairies in the vicinity back then. There is still lots of greenery around the airport, and Flo’s is still there. Many of the dairies have been shut down and relocated to Bakersfield and houses have been put up. Chino/Chino Hills is a booming area and houses are constantly being built. There are still a few dairies, however, that provide a lovely smell any time winds kick up and after a rare rain shower. If you’re ever in the area again, give me a holla’.
Wrenchbender, I do indeed live in Chino. I have been living there for 19 years. In fact, I only live about 2 miles from Chino Airport, and about 5 miles from Ontario Airport. I’m not familiar with the helicopter places you mention, but if they are based at Chino Airport, I’m sure I can take a stroll down there and check it out. They still have that Planes of Fame museum down there that has a few hangers full of vintage aircraft from WWII and the like. Chino Airport has an airshow every year in May, and I see those planes buzzing around my house for a few hours.
Any ideas what routes these aircraft will be used on? YYZ-SYD perhaps?
I have a family of friends in Dandenong, Steve. One of them is an avid Collingwood supporter, I even caught a match vs. Geelong when I was down there. The other is a Carlton supporter. Needless to say, they weren’t doing to well at the time. I’m still a little peeved at the Arsenal/Chelsea draw. How do they draw anyway, just pull names out of a hat? That’s pathetic that they have to play each other now, and the winner takes on Real Madrid.
This 3/2/2 rule is totally not economically feasible, so that’s a good thing to go. If they get split into 4, will they all be members of the Star Alliance still?
P.S. Fantastic thread Hans! Rookies, take note.
I have a similar one with TWA and one with Aeroflot. I think they have the same format. The two I have are very good.

You being in Melbourne, would that be the Collingwood Magpies, Steve? 😉
Speaking of Scottish football, what’s going to happen with Barca and Celtic on Thursday? Better yet, what’s going to happen on Tuesday and Wednesday with Champs league? (Sorry for getting off the subject, yo)

well, I fly the Classic, and I have to say I would`nt fancy doing this type of flying in it! Granted, it would be empty, stripped, no packs, many systems removed/ not req. but still, hand flying the aircraft down low, on a blustery day is extremely fatigueing for any length of time, as well to be effective it would have to be flown at min flaps 10 to get back to a speed to be effective.
The VREF of an empty 200 is around 121 with flaps 30, min control, ( shaded area) is 118 so this is as slow as it can get anyway. The standard dump rate with all pumps, (6) going is 5000 per min, obviously they would drastically increase that with a center tank dump system, but the logistics of such a system are beyond me!
Another point is visibility, the nose drop from flap 25 to 30 is quite pronounced, but at 10 not great, so 200 feet above trees at 10 would not be comfortable.
I imagine poling the thing around down low in the turb and mountains would be apsolutely terrifying!
I guess they could do it, but I sure won`t be first in line to give it a go! 😉
Even though I’m not a pilot, that’s precisely what I was talkin’ about. 😎
I love that Condor scheme.
