Has anybody ever seen the movie “Made,” where Vince Vaughn hits the attendant call button 4 times in the span of 2 minutes? LOL, great scene. I have never once hit that thing, out of all my flights. I just wait till they come around, or I go to the galley myself. FA’s have one of the hardest jobs dealing with unruly pax, and all sorts of other riffraff. My trip to N.Y. 2 weeks ago, I was flying business class on UA from LAX-JFK, and I was reading the TWA, An Airline and It’s Aircraft, and one of the FA’s brought it to the attention of the purser who used to fly TWA, and she started rubbing the book and hugging it. We strolled down memory lane together, she was awe inspired by the book, so I told her where she could get it. Good memories.

The ER’s are used exclusively for the SYD/MEL to the U.S. West coast routes, as they don’t suffer payload restrictions like the regular 744’s do. I was not aware that the 744 would suffer payload restrictions on a SYD-LAX/SRO route anyhow, but apparantly they do, according to the tarmac tour guide.

If I make it up to Victorville, I’ll definitely post the pics, Steve. I still have a lot from SYD I have yet to post.

Not to mention, BA serves a lot more cities in addition to the ones they compete on with UA. I guess UA vs. Virgin would be a more favorable comparison. I think Virgin does pretty damn good on their own, though. I consider them to be in a different class, from an ownership standpoint, than BA. I see what you mean by pushing harder, but I don’t think that’s ever the case in this market. United always had really high load factors on their LHR (Europe in particular, except maybe MXP and DUS which they dropped recently) routes and especially on their Pacific routes (before SARS). So in this case, they wouldn’t have to push harder.

I concurr on the smaller crowds. I really like it upstairs. The seats are the same size as they are downstairs in the 7 abreast. Mind you, the business class (ultimo seats) in the SIA 777-200ER were slightly bigger and just a tad bit nicer (not to mention the 10 inch PTV’s) than they were in the 744. I attribute that to a newer aircraft, as SIA’s 777ER’s are rather new. Oh yeah, didn’t they trade in the A340’s for those? 😀

How far is it, proximity from yourself to the taxiing aircraft? Very close. Like I said before, the winglets on a 744 are practically, but not quite, over your head. This shot of Wunnala dreaming was taken with a 50mm lens, which is nothing.

Victorville is right up the road from me, only a 45 minute drive, and a potential stopover en route to Vegas. I should go pay them a visit. Any idea when Thai will take delivery of these guys?

What do you mean by “push harder?” UA and BA do compete on said route, as they do on the LHR-LAX/JFK/ORD/EWR/BOS (maybe? I think UA might have dropped that one). In every single one of those, BA operates more flights. 3 vs. 1 in LAX. A ton to 2 in JFK, not sure about the others. Either way, BA has a hell of a lot more flights from England to the U.S. than does UA, or even their esteemed colleagues, AA. So even if UA is being subsidized, as a whole, obviously, not just for their domestic or INTL services, BA is still dominating the market, really. As far as the consequences you mentioned, prices rising, service dropping, etc., I just don’t see that happening even in the aforementioned scenario.

Less room for whom? the bins don’t take away any space from the seats. They’re just there. If they weren’t there, there would be a gap between the seat and window, since the ceiling slopes in rather sharply.

I don’t know when the new one is due out, soon hopefully. Thanks for all the kind words boys, more are on the way. I don’t know if any of you saw the QF A330 I posted on the thread that was named “QANTAS A330’s.” Should still be on page 2.

Mongu, you’re the financial guru in here, in my opinion, and I always respect your views. But what the U.S. gov’t does for the airlines that are based here, has absolutely no bearing whatsoever to what happens to aviation in the U.K. To each, his own. If the gov’t of France wants to back Air France, great. If the gov’t of Greece wants to continue to run Olympic like a bunch of morons like they have since Onassis gave it to them, great. If the gov’t of the UK doesn’t wish to help their own like we do here, then so be it. If UA were to go under, then another carrier in the U.S. would be allocated their slots in LHR. Now, if the U.S. gov’t gave some money to say, Lufthansa, then I can see your point. But as long as we’re helping out our own, quite frankly, it’s none of the UK’s damn business.

Oh, one of those types! I was once flying first class on a UA 733, of which there are only 2 rows of 4 each. I was in 2B and the 2 gentlemen in 1A and 1B did not cease their conversation while the safety briefing was being read. Well, the 2nd flight attendant (not the purser, as they were sitting down while reading), got really pissed off and told them to shut it! Serves them right!
