Even more interesting is how QF operates all 3 engine types on their 767’s. The -200’s have Pratt’s and GE’s and the -300’s have RR’s and GE’s. The only 3 airlines that standardize on a particular engine manufacturer, it seems, are Lufthansa, United, and Cathay. It’s pretty much guaranteed Lufthansa are going to take GE’s, United are going to take Pratt’s, and Cathay are going to take RR engines unless they don’t have a choice. Look at Singapore, traditionally an exclusive P&W customer, opted for Trents on their 777’s. BA opted for GE’s on their initial batch of 777’s. Thai opted for Trents on their 777’s.
Mongu, what do you mean by, “first to be targeted by LCC’s?” What are LCC’s?
That’s an interesting point Mongu, and I asked the same question to the tarmac tour operator at SYD when I took it in August. I don’t think he had a definite answer for me, either. Even before QF started taking delivery of brand new A332’s and the 744ER’s, they had taken delivery of former Malaysian 744’s that were GE powered. Their original 763’s were all GE powered, but then they took the 2nd hand ex-BA 763’s that are RR powered, so that was interesting. The 744ER’s only are offered with the GE engines, they had no choice there. But with the A332’s, they did, and they chose GE’s. Perhaps they are trying to standardize on the GE engine. But if that is the case, why did they take BA’s 763’s with the RR’s, as a favor to them? I’m not sure which engine option they have for the A380, has it been specified yet? Interesting how you can tell the difference between QF’s GE powered 744’s and the ER model. All the ER models have white engine cowlings as opposed to the standard grey.
You boys in Europe really know what it takes to be sports fans, I admire that. So I’m guessing you’re a Celtic fan, Bhoy? They should win that game. I like Larsson.
He must be at a 45 degree angle with the runway! What airport is that?
Are you rooting for Celtic, Ren?
So I’m guessing threads that involve, “what is your favourite livery” or “what is your favourite aircraft,” that generally involve the posting of pics, which will amount to a lot more than 3 or 4, should be blackballed now? For the record, I just got a new computer and am on broadband now, so yes, it flies. However, prior to that, I was using my brother’s computer (very slow) with dial up (slower yet). And yes, it would take a few seconds, as kev mentioned, to open up some of those threads with a few pics on them. I never once thought, “geez, this sucks, we should post fewer pics.” I just dealt with it. Can we not alter the way we post threads/pics, please? I’m telling you this much, because I got a new computer and as soon as I get some updated software for my 4 year old scanner, I’m going to be posting my own pics like nuts!
You better believe I remember that, Hand! Mind you, I live in the L.A. area, so even though it was a magnitude 7.1, we did not feel it in my neck of the woods, so they surely would not have felt it in Asia! I have felt other pretty big earthquakes, though, in the magnitude 6 range. No biggie, we get them all the time. Think about how many people would have died in other parts of the world, had a magnitude 7 hit, tens of thousands, as opposed to just 80? The way houses are built here (wood and stucko), they withstand all that, unless the epicenter is about 5 feet under the base of your house. The reason that earthquake was as significant as it was, I was 15 at the time getting ready to watch my Oakland A’s play the San Francisco Giants in the Bay Area World Series (how ironic?). It was almost gametime and all of a sudden, there was static on the screen. The rest, as they say, is history. Amazing how you actually had to endure that on your first trip to the U.S.! I ALMOST had to endure a natural disaster my first, and only time I’ve been to Mexico, when I flew down to Cancun in October of 98. I was there from Oct. 23-26. Let’s just say, the airport was closed on the 27th because of Hurricane Mitch.
It really depends on the aircraft, that dictates how much ‘extra’ legroom you get in the exit rows. Obviously if there is a full size door there, like a 747, you have more legroom than in business class. Typically on narrowbodies, you have the one or twe overwing exits, so they just make the row wide enough to accomodate people having to walk through there. On UA’s 757’s, that amounts to A LOT more legroom. On their A320’s, however, it’s probably only a few inches more. On their 727’s, when they were still around, they had about as much room as the 757’s did. Now, on their A319’s and 737’s, they only have the one over wing exit, and they basically have one seat missing right next to it. I really never saw the logic in this, but nevertheless, that amounts to a total of 2 seats immediately behind that missing seat that have an enormous amount of legroom. This last summer, I rode on Virgin’s 73G and 738, and I don’t recall off the top of my head, how they have the exit rows configured, but if I’m not mistaken, it’s in a similar format to UA’s A320’s and 757’s, where you have 12 seats (6 on the -700) that have a few more inches of legroom.
Albeit, without “CityFlyer” titles, I’m sure.
Those QF A330’s are nice. I got a couple of pics of one at SYD a few weeks back, that I’ll be posting real soon.
I think you just need to upgrade your computer, Monster! Either that, or get a broadband connection, or both. Mine opens them up right quick, no matter how many pics.
I get emergency exit economy class seating on UA all the time, and I don’t have to pay an additional charge, either.
Seeing as you are visiting your ex, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind driving to S.F. to pick you up, especially since she asked you to visit. They’re building a BART station near the new Intl. terminal at SFO, but I don’t know if it has been completed as of yet.
I thought the eye hospital was an L1011? I could be wrong.
