Good to have you back Steve. The forum is seemingly under control once again.
Of course it’s for you, brotha! You being the ‘Wrenchbender’ for United, I know you get to work on those the most! It’s also to represent, considering how many RR lovers we have in here! 😎
… After he had told his employees, “Southwest is out to kill us, out to get your jobs,” or something of that nature. Southwest is already starting to advertise their upcoming LAX-PHL nonstop service on commercials here in the L.A. area. $99US each way is a pretty good fare for that type of route. I actually flew USAirways last week on 2 segments. Pretty decent service, actually. Their club in CLT was especially nice.
Michael,
Good to have you back, and I’m always pleased to read a report on a Star Alliance carrier. I am very disturbed to hear that your return flight was so bad. When it is 12 hours in duration, it makes it all that much worse. Seeing as your previous 3 flight on TG went so well, and this one went so bad, it was probably a more difficult pill to swallow. I echo the sentiments that one of the members mentioned earlier on this thread, in that you should notify Thai Airways via an email on their website. Basically, copy and paste what you just wrote for us in the email you send them. If you are a frequent flyer member, include that number in your email. Also include that you plan on flying them in the future and are loyal to them, however you were inconvenienced by the sub-par service on this particular flight. Lastly, do not lose faith in Thai because of this one bad flight. I have a bad flight or two on United, as well. When I do, however, I let them know about it and I have been awarded in the past.
I thought SAS retired their DC-9’s a while ago?
If it was the same aircraft, Paul, it might have originally been a -400D but later converted to -400 Standard. To my knowlege, some of ANA’s Domestics had undergone this conversion, therefore it is possible you saw it at Heathrow after the conversion was done, but flew on it in Japan while it was still in Domestic configuration.
In the U.S., I’d say Pan Am and to a slightly lesser extent, TWA 707’s and 747’s. Pan Am launched 747 service from JFK to LHR and they also launched 707 service from JFK to CDG.

Well, after the weekend’s football results they won’t be calling it “United” or “City” will they?:D 😀 😀 😀
Definitely not! 😎

The old Ansett code-share has long been rumored to have been taken up by Virgin Blue.
Yeah, so I heard about 2 years ago. United even lists them as a code-share partner in their in-flight magazine, ‘Hemispheres.’ If you try to make an online booking on UAL.com, however, no flight of VirginBlue ever comes up as an option. Furthermore, I flew VirginBlue a few years back and asked one of the employees about the code-share, and they knew nothing.

The MEL shuttle must be a real loss maker for them particularly since they stopped operating MEL AKL LAX.
Yeah, in fact I flew to MEL on that routing as well, and there seemed to be more people on the AKL-MEL leg. Do you know if they had International rights to carry pax originating in AKL to MEL for that flight? In theory, they would be competing with NZ, but they used to overlap on the LAX-AKL and LAX-SYD runs, as well. Once UA cancelled the LAX-MEL flight, they had no choice but to move the MEL continuation from MEL to SYD. Theoretically, they should just funnel all pax going to MEL on NZ via AKL.

(A sad part of this deal is the the Australian based UAL employees have been banned from using their buddy-passes between SYD & MEL unless part of an International leg as QANTAS complained that it was ‘stealing’ potential revenue from them! How petty is that? It does seem typical of QANTAS’ attitude from what I can see.)
That’s vintage QF/Oneworld type tactics. Is that NZ-QF deal ever going to happen? I hope not.

Erm, sorry for going completely of the topic, but isn’t the rear emergency exit a bit dangerous for evacuation if one of the engines are on fire?
They just wouldn’t use that exit. 727’s and MD-80’s have exits in the same general vicinity of their rear-mounted engines.
Fantastic photos MEA! I look forward to Beirut re-gaining their “Las Vegas of the Middle East” moniker that they held in the 1960’s.

Did they think the A343’s were that bad that they had to get rid of all them??
All reasons stated above are valid. Basically, SQ’s use of the A343 was for the ‘thinner’ Euro-routes that didn’t justify 747 usage. They were unhappy with the performance of the A343’s because they got subsequently better performance out of the 777-200ER. Already having a sizeable fleet of non-ER 772’s and 773, they decided to go in that direction. Indeed EK has taken up those examples (I was under the impression one or two wound up with Air Tahiti Nui, BWIA, or something) and not taken up any penalties from Airbus, as was was being threatened about a year or so ago.
My hometown airport, ONT, handles about 7 million pax annually. Southwest is the major player there. Take them away, and they handle about 1 million, probably. 😉
UA don’t operate any -400D’s. One of the 2 trans-pac flights UA operates daily to SYD (one from LAX and one from SFO) gathers a few pax from each flight and continues on to MEL, and back to SYD again. Pretty non-efficient, if you ask me, but that’s what happens when one of your partners goes under. I flew on that same flight a few years back, Tim. I flew from MEL to SYD and we didn’t use much runway at all. We were up and away, pronto. Only 50 or so of us on that flight.
Re: Any info would be great!

Thanks for your response. Living in Boston, there is not much to know about Logan Airport!
Welcome Bkonner. I live in the L.A. area, and you’re correct about spotting/commerical aviation not being a big hobby in the U.S. I have a single solitary cousin that I talk commercial aviation with, and that’s it. Mind you, I have a decent sized family. Every time I go up to Imperial Hill near LAX, everybody up there seemingly is British, either living in the U.S. or visiting. It’s too bad, but what can you do? I flew into/out of Logan once a few years back. I don’t remember too much of it. I do know that one of my favorite pics on A.net is of a BA 777 in the Landor livery taken at BOS. The backdrop of these old-school houses with snow on the rooftops is amazing.
