8 years is ‘aging?’ LOL, hardly! I would think they’d be looking to replace their 762’s before their 763’s. Intersting that they would replace 763’s with either the 777 or the A340. That is a significant upgrade in capacity and range. Perhaps the routes they use the 763’s on, could use a capacity boost.
When I flew ATH-FRA on an LH A300 two years ago, we got a water cannon salute in FRA due to the captain retiring. It was pretty cool to see the stream of water on the windows from the inside.

Nice surprises for those spotters in Canberra. What would they do for the pax on those flights going to SYD, or the ones continuing on to MEL on the UA flight even? Seeing as I’ve done that flight many times, I would hate to have to take a bus or something back to SYD after 14 hours across the Pacific.

What is used for the de-iceing, is it just steam?
Not quite. It is some sort of chemical solution sprayed on.
LH’s A300-600R’s fly to various Euro destinations. I know the 3 daily FRA-ATH flights are operated by them. According to previous timetables, they don’t use them for long-haul flights.

Not at all. I appreciate the informative responses.
Thanks Hans. You mentioned the last 747 service operating to JFK; when was the last 747 service to LAX? I could have swore I saw them there later than when you mentioned, but I could be wrong.
In what weight class is the 7E7 supposed to be, given the sick power of these engines?

Good quality? Christ Almighty I surely hope so!!!
Welcome addition, indeed. It’s bad enough NZ pulled out of the LAX-SYD route a year or so ago. Prices on that route have gone through the roof. I was looking up rates for December later this year, and they are $2200US for QF, UA, and NZ. Ridiculous. Also good to see another U.S. carrier down there.

What happened to dear old PW? [Sarcastic]
P&W is doing just fine Matthew. After all, their motto is “Dependable Engines.”

Re: NW DC-10 in new livery! (at last)

Maybe it is the light conditions, but the new livery looks really bland on the DC-10. It looked quite nicely on the A330.
I think if the red on the tail was extended to the No. 2 engine as well, it wouldn’t look as ‘bland’ to you, Peter. I personally think it looks fantastic, but would prefer it had the aforementioned engine been painted red. I just think it’s great that they got painted, period. Hopefully they will be around for a while.
