I would agree with Mark to the point that the aluminum sheet may not be from a C-47, but I’m not prepared to dismiss it outright simply because the sheet isn’t an exact, to-the-millimeter match with a known C-47 (although that’s the standard Gillespie is insisting on). This is simply due to the huge number of minute variances between the many different manufacturers of C-47s during WWII – something I’ve seen on C-47s I’ve inspected.

TIGHAR has artificially limited the potential sources for the artifact to known Allied aircraft crashes and wrecks in the area of Nikumaroro, specifically at Canton Island, which was a HUGE transshipment, repair and supply depot for that part of the Pacific. Doing that left them with:

    • P-39 Airacobra( 1 loss)
    • Boeing B-17 Fortress (2 losses)
    • PBY Catalina (8 losses)
    • B-24 Liberator/Navy PB4Y-1 (3 losses)
    • C-87 cargo version of B-24 (1 loss)
    • C-47 Skytrain (1 loss) This aircraft crashed on Sydney Island, 230 miles east of Nikumaroro.
    • Lockheed 10E Special (1 loss)
    • PV-1/Army C-60 Ventura (1 loss)
    • l-749A Constellation ( 1 loss)
    • PBM Mariner (3 losses)
    • B-25/ Navy PBJ Mitchell (2 losses)
    • Sikorsky S-42B (1 loss)

None of these aircraft can be positively excluded as the source of the aluminum sheet, Gillespie’s definitive statement and “research report” to the contrary. None of the aircraft TIGHAR examined at the National Museum of the US Air Force were inspected on the upper surfaces or many interior surfaces; not all types that could have been the source were available for inspection, and no systematic notes, measurements or photos were taken during the inspections.

Another issue that TIGHAR hasn’t addressed as a possible source of the aluminum is the large number and types of aircraft that passed through Canton Island that may have needed a wing panel or whatnot repaired. You can add the list:

    • P-40 Warhawk
    •  P-51 Mustang
    • P-47 Thunderbolt
    • P-38 Lightning
    • F4F Wildcat
    • F4U Corsair
    • F6F Hellcat
    • C-46 Commando
    • C-56 Lodestar
    • PB2Y Coronado
    • B-26 Marauder
    • TBF/TBM Avenger
    • SB2C Helldiver
    • PV-2 Harpoon, and I’m sure others. As I said, a lot of aircraft passed through Canton on their way somewhere else.

How many of those aircraft have 0.032-inch aluminum sheet anywhere on them, and rivet holes with the correct diameter and spacing? I don’t know – but neither does TIGHAR. Until Gillespie positively eliminates all these potential US WWII aircraft as the source of his artifact, all he has is a piece of aluminum that could have come from anywhere.

There’s also the matter of TIGHAR’s metallurgical analysis …

As of today, the TIGHAR website has this to say about the P-38, among other things:

“Contributions to the Maid of Harlech Memorial Fund go to help cover TIGHAR’s expenses in advocating for the responsible recovery and conservation of Lockheed P-38F 41-7677. If you wish, you can make your donation of $100 or more in the name of any World War II veteran. When the aircraft is recovered, a permanent memorial with the names of the donors and honorees will accompany the P-38 to the accessioning museum.

In the meantime, we’ll send you a handsome Certificate of Recognition acknowledging your support in helping us make sure this priceless relic is preserved for future generations.

To donate to the Maid of Harlech Project, click HERE. “

This seems to be going well beyond the bounds of wishful thinking, in light of what the Welsh government has done.

As ianwoodward9 said above, the EDIT button for our own posts seems to have gone Missing In Action.

We have a saying for this, One step forward, Two steps back. There is also the very apt, Pissing into the wind. Smart people don’t do that – it covers them with pee and annoys the wind.

One thing no one has really addressed is what happens when an entity does something as drastic as what Key did to its forum – the trust of the members is now completely gone.

Some of the most interesting threads in here have been going on for months or even years. Yes, we all know that Key owns everything in here, but still, there was a certain expectation, a social contract, that what the forum posters created on their own would remain, largely unaltered. Key has tossed that straight in the bin, as my cousins across the Atlantic say.

A serious miscalculation on Key’s part. TIGHAR did the same thing when it made its forums pay-to-post, and they have never recovered or been anywhere near as useful and vibrant as they once were/

Now, now, Dave, you’re supposed to accept Ric Gillespie’s word for it that he’s solved the Earhart mystery. Using his version of “science.”

But a mystery TIGHAR is still collecting donations for. Along with the P-38 in Wales. And Glenn Miller’s airplane. And the White Bird. Did I miss anything? Oh, right, operating costs! How could anyone possibly forget that???

By the end of this week:

Images will be embedded into posts and not displayed as attachments at the bottom of a post.

By the end of next week: Private messaging will be added

BRAVO. THIS is what has been needed all along. Specifics. Timelines. Not “updates coming.” Specifics implies that Key has people who know what they’re doing. If you can keep this level of specificity up, and actually meet the promised deadlines, Key might, just, save the valuable commodity this forum once was.

That’s good to hear. Even better would be telling us what the latest round of updates will consist of.

JBoyle, yes, I think it’s safe to say that ANYONE who goes poking around Nikumaroro without TIGHAR either overseeing or participating/hijacking the effort can be said to be “disrupting the group’s dogma.” Which I have no problem with. In real science, hypotheses are always open to challenge, new data, and new conclusions. Which is not the way TIGHAR practices what it calls “science.”

If the skull fragments don’t turn out to be Earhart’s (and I’m not even remotely optimistic they will), then we will never, ever hear about it. NatGeo hates to admit failure as much as any other high-dollar, publicity-driven organization.

Similarly, if the land expedition data and artifact analysis doesn’t find anything definitive (my money is still on DNA), then likewise, we will never, ever hear about it.

Which will, unfortunately, leave TIGHAR free to declare the mystery solved due to its 30-plus years of relentless “scientific investigation.” Which it is still accepting donations for on its website as of today …

Prediction – this is going to amount to nothing. You have to remember what NatGeo was facing at this point. Bob Ballard was coming up empty at Nikumaroro with his high-tech underwater search, the land search was visually unexciting (and apparently unproductive) … they desperately needed SOMETHING to spin this out into a two-hour TV special that would garner large ad revenues.

What better than the high drama of rooting through various boxes of old bones? Deep in the dusty archive of the national museum? And finding, providentially, the potential Rosetta skull in the very … last … box …

It’s a female skull, with an unknown provenance, on an island that saw more than its share of violence and slaughter during WWII (and where soldier’s remains from both sides are still being discovered).

DaveF68, TIGHAR never lets things like facts and reality get in the way of a good fund-raising opportunity. Or even a mediocre fund-raising opportunity.

24 hours or thereabouts for TIGHAR to claim the credit. In an e-mail this morning, Gillespie said, “After twelve years of effort led by TIGHAR Researcher Matt Rimmer, CADW (pronounced KAHdoo), the Welsh government’s historic environment service, has recognized The Maid of Harlech as an official historic monument. Disturbance of the site, until now protected only by the sand that hides it, will carry significant legal penalties. This is the first time an unrecovered vintage aircraft in the UK has been granted legal protection. For more see this excellent article from the BBC. “

Hmmm … no mention of TIGHAR in the article. Or the TIGHAR researcher who “led” the effort.

And despite TIGHAR’s spending at least $6,000 towards this aircraft’s recovery or preservation (according to its tax forms), there is no evidence TIGHAR’s actions had anything to do with the Welsh government’s decision.

So now the clock is running on how long before TIGHAR takes complete credit for this.
