Love this picture – nice and clear and showing a great carrier compliment. Brazil should look at this.

None of this would have been possible had it not been for the Aussie MetalStorm group!
Stupid government didn’t think the MS was a good idea, so the group sold it to the US and they are having so much fun with developing this stuff- Singapore Technologies is also involved and the blasted thing is, once these become mainstream, the RAN are going to want them on their vessels… and we’ll pay through the nose for them!

    BAE systems leading the way.

    No one will buy her.

All nations that might have been interested already have projects in the works apart from Brazil.

No one will think it worth while even if we do. Hell India knows how to keep these ships going longer than any one – would love to see her go to them. Lose the ski jump and be a Helicopter carrier for them now.

    with navalised M346 trainers? 😀

Wash your mouth out. Hawks for the job – BAE can do it as well as boeing!

my favourite small carrier design. And something that could be done to CAVOUR if they fancied it.

The UK has scaled back the specifications for a new type warship to shrink costs, tackle a record budget deficit and allow more vessels to be ordered, a senior defence source has said.

The specifications of the Type 26 frigate will be partly modified, while costs will be slashed from £500m to £250-300m.

“We want numbers. We want quality, but if you have cheaper unit costs, you can have more of them,” the source added.

The Type 26 frigates will replace Type 23, of which there are 13 in service. The reduced cost of the Type 26 would save up to £3.25bn if 13 ships were ordered, according to Reuters.

The UK has cut its defence budget of £36.9bn by 8% in real terms up to 2015, according to a strategic defence review.

The review reaffirmed the government’s drive for cheaper, more adaptable and less specialised equipment that is more suitable for export markets.

So what do we think we will be losing on the Type 26?

Swerve why do you bother getting dragged into this stupid debate.

We are here to talk about an F-4 replacement not wwII.

Now as said before Typhoon all the way, getting in and being part of the team.

Typhoon with AESA and Meteor – This is what Japan should be buying into and now. With the potential for also working with eurojet on thrust vectoring.

We all know that Japan likes the idea of Twin engines for all that patroling over the water they do 🙂

if they manage it would you say that the MOD should check it out as an alternative to CAMM just in case?

The difference is that FLAADS is a requirement for local AREA air defence. Area air defence means the ability to engage and defeat a weapon heading for a different vessel in your group i.e a crossing target. Point defence weapons, like RAM, are designed to engage targets coming right at you. Targets heading for you are usually much easier to defeat as they usually have very modest bearing rates. Crossing targets usually demand more of the missile as the weapon has to get out in front of the target in order to make the intercept.

From the Raytheon website with regards to Block 2 RAM

    RAM Block 2

Block 2, the next step in the spiral development of the Rolling Airframe Missile, is a kinematic and RF receiver upgrade. A larger, more powerful rocket motor and advanced control section make the missile three times more maneuverable with twice the effective intercept range. This provides the Block 2 missile with the capability to defeat high-maneuver threats as well as the ability to intercept crossing threats. An enhanced RF receiver allows detection of anti-ship missiles that employ low probability of intercept radars.

What about the HAS mode – doesnt that take into accuont that – the ability to take helicopters and planes down as well as strike land based positions. The ability to take down helicopters and planes is local air defence!
